I am a cat person and have had many cats. I would say both are great and I advise you even if you get a boy to have him neutered. Male cats, if not neutered will "spray" on your furniture to mart their territory, and you don't want their urine smell in your house. Also, he will be much more content to stay home. Only advice to give you other than that is that if you have 2 cats, its best to chose a male and a female...they balance each other better. You don't want 2 women in your house, or two competing men!
Both make good pets once they are fixed. Females have to be fixed or they mass produce. Males have to be fixed or they are constantly fighting and wandering looking for females. Males spray also. Generally once fixed, most of them stop spraying. Both really should be kept inside.
If they won't be spayed or neutered, both have an equal disadvantage. Males spray urine all over your stuff and home, and females will become pregnant and saddle you with up to ten more mouths to feed and spay or neuter (Or each of them will spray or get pregnant) If they are spayed or neutered, the gender matters less than the personality. Spay and neuter!
