There's no need for additional gun control legislation. In fact, restrictions on silencers should be lifted to limit hearing damage to shooters. I'm not aware of any abuse of silencers that warranted the initial restrictions. I think that they just got lumped in with machine guns and sawed off shotguns as a poorly thought out addition to the legislation.
So long as the person behind the gun is responsible and not going to snap easily then they should be perfectly fine to own a gun, I am responsible with mine because I know what it can do and I respect what it does. Trying to take that away will result in a revolt, anyone trying to take away that right should realize that.
I think this incident (in Conn.) is going to be a catalyst for some change, like it or not. The Republican party will demonstrate their willingness to reach folks by pushing some surprising ideas in the near future.
Tough issue. You have a right to own a gun, but you do NOT have the right to make that gun, community property. It solely belongs to you, not your children, or their friends, or any one else in the neighborhood. This was written into our constitution due to the environment at the time, and it was about defending our country against England. Since that time it has been twisted and contorted into all sorts of things.
What we really need is people and personality control. I've owned guns for the last 20 years of my life, all purchased legally, and to the best of my knowledge none of them have ever walked out of my gun safe and shot anyone. The horribly tragic events over the past few years involving mass murder had nothing to do with gun control, anyone who believes that must also believe that no one was ever killed before guns were invented.
Unless you are worried about being "mugged" by the 82nd Airborne, you don't really need an assault weapon capable of firing 40-60 bullets per minute. Discuss banning these weapons and expanded magazines. Make sure all weapons are registered. Have non hunting/non sport weapons carry high risk insurance. No reasonable idea should be off of the table.
