Why do a lot of Atheists even celebrate Christmas?

Report as

Because putting up the tree and giving and receiving gifts is still fun.
It doesn't have to be about Jesus.

Nor was it, for thousands of years.
It was the pagan celebration of Saturnalia.

Almost everyone follows the pagan celebration, same with halloween. It doesnt matter if you believe or not, if you do it your doing it.

Because there are very few true atheists. And they would say they are not celebrating the religious side of Christmas

I just laugh at it, they will follow the ritual, but claim its not religious, yet it was the religious who started the ritual in the first place.

There are many true atheists. I am one of them.

Christmas isn't about religion, as much as it's about capitalism.
There is no religious ritual to Christmas ... other than some people who never attend church the rest of the year, will go on Easter and Christmas.

jjjjj13 - do you ever swear to god or use the name as a curse word?

Walt_OReagan - Capitalism plays a part but some of it is religious. And I agree on the church part. That one always goads me.

Yes and yes. That doesn't make me a Christian. I was raised Christian, so it's an ingrained habit, but I assure you I'm definitely an atheist.
Report as
I guess it depends on your definition of what is an Atheist. I didn't think it had to do with any religion
Report as
Hey, bochala, an atheist is a person, who does not believe in the existence of any supernatural being.
There are MANY, true atheists.
And most celebrate christmas.
It's fun, and we can do it, without being religious.

They are not celebrating Christmas...they're just along for the pleasures that partying brings.

Exactly right!

Americans, especially, will celebrate ANYTHING that gives them an excuse to party.

lol

So if you do everything in a certain ritual, follow all the steps to a tee, but you dont believe in it, you acutally arent following that ritual?
Report as
@ Ben ... if you say "if you follow the ritual, you must believe in it" - then you must be saying that, when Christian churches celebrate "Christmas" by putting up lights & a tree - they are celebrating the pagan celebration of Saturnalia.

Because it's a fact that is where these Christmas "rituals" originated. Feasting, Gift giving, Lights, Decorative tree, even the date of the celebration. All have their origins in the same pagan ritual/celebration.
Report as
Well there are Christian churches believe it or not that don't celebrate Christmas for that very reason.
Also if I bow down in front of something while alot of other people are I dont have to believe I am worshipping it to actually be worshipping it...See what I am saying?

Because to some people it's not about Jesus. It's about families being together, which anyone can relate to. And it's a time to celebrate and reflect the spirit of giving. Saint Nicholas was someone everyone aspire to be.

Because, I think of it as thanking people for working all year not the religious part of it.

I'm not sure because my daughter proclaims to be an atheist but she loves Christmas. She is young and and likes to spout evolution. I've learned to stay quiet.

Because it's not even about Jesus anymore. It has become a holiday of consumerism and self-indulgence, which is fun for anyone of any religion.

I was raised Christian, but decided for myself, when I was a certainl maturity, that I don't believe in God. Celebrating Christmas is something I'd ALWAYS done, and I don't think just because I stopped believing in God, that I would quit with Christmas. Religion was never even a part of it, with our family.

It just doesnt make sense why they claim to be atheist yet they will still partake in these pagan rituals. Halloween is the samething. Just because we dont believe in certain gods if we all go through the actions of worshiping them we are still worshiping them. You dont have to believe, you are still doing it.
Report as
Well, I guess the religious part of it just isn't made an issue of, with us, of course. Maybe it is wrong of us to celebrate, but for me, it's all I've known. Maybe I am a hypocrite, (and I can't stand hypocrites!) but I won't sit out of family gatherings and not partake. I enjoy the giving aspect of Christmas, and the festivities. it didn't even occur to me to change my ways, in that nature, when I didn't believe in God any longer.
