Why is Christmas so depressing?

Am I the only one who feels this way, while everyone else is cheery listening to their cheerful songs, baking, and excited for Christmas day. I just want to curl up in a ball and hide.

You are not the only one. I'm not that thrilled this year because I'm not seeing my family. Plus the pressure for everything to happy and cheerful. Just not feeling it. It seems I see more people feeling that way this year too.

Sorry you not seeing family gatorblu, no friends around? Or just be content to have a quiet day, read a book, catch up on some tv , just think it's a day you can be lazy w/out feeling pressured!:-). That's how my husband and I are taking it, don't see my Ma or his Son until next week, plus we both not that crazy bout all the "Hoopla" and Commercialism.
Sending you Peaceful wishes!

Cj, it's just another day to me, an extra day off from work (my days off are Sunday & Monday) and a paid holiday. My parents are both gone, sibs live a distance away, had planned to visit my brother and SIL but it's snowing between here and there so l backed out at the last minute.
l'm alone but not at all lonely, l am a servant to 3 wonderful felines who are loved dearly! Can't ask for anything more. l feel blessed... :-)

Wittepier, I still cooked the whole dinner, ham & all, and we got my FIL out of the nursing home. He and my husband had a relaxing day. I cooked and cleaned up and took care of the dogs that won't go out by themselves when it is cold (Windchill was 1* this morning and 0* now) I am not really complaining, just stating how my day went. Hubby goes back to work tomorrow and I plan on taking an uninterupted hot bath and enjoy the peace and quiet. I would do it tonight but I am too tired to wait for the tub to fill.

All sounds nice except for the Windchill! Oof!
Hope you got yr relaxing Bath.
Happy 2013!

What does being a Jew have to do with being depressed on Christmas? You are deranged.

Wow Mr_Snowman! Religion has nothing to do with it. It is a very difficult time of year for many people. Many are away from there loved ones. Not to mention all the depressing news out there. I hope you know how lucky you are to have that little bubble you are living in.

Because you are forgetting the reason for the season: CHRIST.

Jesus was not born on the 25th.
Report as
I think we all know that. But this is when it is celebrated.

And like I said, whether he was born on this day or not, he has nothing to do with it.

Why do you feel bad?:)

Celebrating Christ doesn't magically take away pain. Granted, praising Him helps lift the spirit...but I think you're missing the point flip.

If you're Christian it does:) that's what we try to focus on in my house, but sometimes people forget.

It can be a hard time of year. Christmas conjures up negative emotions and memories for me.... I have to FORCE myself to be in the NOW. Because I have a beautiful life now... and the pain of Christmas past, is....well.....past.....

It's depressing because some people don't have families to celebrate with. Some people don't have friends to celebrate either. They see people in relationships kissing under the Mistle toe and everyone giving gifts to each other and some people don't get any.
It's very painful to go through.....

it's not the receiving gifts to me it's the not having the family

It's not uncommon CJ, I do hope that you're able to have a Merry Christmas though. I won't be able to be around my family this year for different reasons so I chose to work.

I think it depends on what state you're already in to start with. If you're upset already as it is, sometimes Christmas time makes it worse, because like others already stated, it's built up, and it's a lot of pressure and expectation when there is already so much on your mind. And the memories....
.
Hope your moods become lifted, and you have a merry Christmas :) I think Christmas is either a time where you're filled with joy, or a time that your heart aches. I think it's very common. I find that serving others during this season, helps lift, or bring more joy to my heart. (and makes it feel more like Christmas) there are a lot of aching hearts this holiday season that we don't see or know about, it's not all smiles and laughter.

No you aren't the only one.I am not a fan of the holidays. I guess it is because I cannot enjoy cliches such as Christmas trees and presents like I used to. It is truly difficult to enjoy anything considering the kind of world we live in. But I know one thing....even if I dislike the redundancy and corniness of Christmas music, and dislike spending money on things I don't need, or even watching people waste so much time on making "Christmas spirit"....I do love spending time with my family. Those are the moments I find are my happiest and I cherish them. Maybe Christmas doesn't have to be a holiday where you focus on drawing your happiness out of superficiality....but just from being with the ones you love.

The ones I really care about are dead or drug addicts.
Report as
I know this may seem silly to alot of people, but I firmly believe that not even death can separate people completely. Just because a person isn't there to be seen or heard or even touched....doesn't necessarily mean they aren't there.

It's obvious from lots of other responses that you're not alone in feeling this way CJ.....so apparently this time of year isn't all sh!ts and giggles for everyone, BUT, if a person is "depressed" at this time of year, then it makes me wonder how they are feeling for the rest of the year???? I have issues and concerns with what Christmas has been forced to become by materialism and commercialism, so with that in mind I'm "disturbed" around this time of year because apparently money buys everyone happiness......This year has been more tougher for me only because of the extra stress of "legal issues" and being unemployed for what feels like FOREVER.....All I wanted for Christmas was a bit of normalcy......CHEER UP, Christmas is over tomorrow......8)

I was talking to someone the other day about Christmas, and I said, "You know Christmas wouldn't be SO bad, if it were only one day of the year" my friend looked at me funny and said "It is only one day of the year, December 25th", and I said "No, you're wrong. Christmas starts the day after Thanksgiving and isn't over until after New Years". That right there, is the absolute truth.
