They fixate on the negative aspects in their life( or what they perceive as negative). This causes hormonal changes in their brain and then they cannot break this cycle on their own. Meds help but therapy is the key to breaking the cycle. Learning new brain patterns (ways of viewing life) and also sometimes meds will help you see the beauty in your world.

It's not really a controllable thing. We can't choose wether we get depression or not. Usually it just comes. I also suffer from depression, and it's really hard, but we just have to move through it. Depression can also be brought on by major sad events, like a close family death or something of that matter. I know my depression was brought on when my boyfriend dumped me, my best friend commuted suicide, and my brother was diagnosed with leukemia all in the same week. Ever since then it's gotten worse and worse. But I promise you that we can get through it. If you ever need help, I'm here for you dear. Merry Christmas!

Well it is a disease or because they are stressed and upset. I have depression too but I'm not on meds because I'm on meds for a lot of other things and the doctor doesn't want to drug me.

Chemical imbalance. Start thinking more positive and surrounding yourself with supportive, positive people. It will take time, but with prayer and patience you'll be off your meds in no time. Good luck!

There is still no general agreement about what causes depression. Experts say depression is caused by a combination of factors, such as the person's genes, their biochemical environment, personal experiences and psychological makeup.

When a shock happens that sends the message
"the world you trusted cannot be trusted"

eg a gross injustice/unfairness occurs
eg a power play is used against you
eg you are not taken seriously
eg you are lied about
eg you get hit
eg you get deceived
eg you are in a bad accident
eg you witness terrible things
eg you suffer false allegations, false findings and false punishment
eg when you are living in anxiety (more serious than stress)
eg horror as black seems white and white seems black

it is now understood people suffer "loss of the assumptive world"
[Ronnie Janoff-Bulman]
Its this trauma that triggers fight or flight mode in a human.
both ways, depression usually arises as you have to
a) get into useless and ruining law procedures
b) or admit defeat and cower (flight)

Note that when "life" is the bully we don't do so badly
We understand that it is just life.
When the above list occur to you, it seems inexplicable.

There are chemical changes in the brain, long term anxiety and depression heighten chances of post traumatic stress disorder, panic attacks and earlier onset dementia.

Doctors aren't sure what causes depression, but a prominent theory is altered brain structure and chemical function. Chemicals called neurotransmitters become unbalanced. What pushes these chemicals off course? One possibility is the stress of a traumatic event, such as losing a loved one or a job. Other triggers could include certain medications, alcohol or substance abuse, hormonal changes, or even the season.

Because they have very high expectations and the net result is far below the expectations, sometimes everything goes just opposite, some times our bad luck is good. All failures make us depressed.

Depression can lead to emotional and physical problems. Typically, people with depression find it hard to go about their day-to-day activities, and may also feel that life is not worth living.
Feeling sad or what we may call "depressed", this happens to all of us. The sensation usually passes after a while. However, people with a depressive disorder - clinical depression - find that their state interferes with daily life. The people that always get depressed they think that other people don’t care about them.
