Personally I wouldn't. It strikes me as a little peculiar. It does have practical value but I can think of other things I would offer instead, like cash for example. No one knows what the new couple needs for the house better than the new couple themselves.
The person who did this deserves a cup of tea and the opportunity to explain their logic. It may be an error. The person may be exhibiting Alzheimer's symptoms and needs a plan to get help. Instead of being angry, be patient and curious. Arrange to visit with that person in person soon. Reserve judgement. Listen.
Well if it was my homemade garlic mayo I might understand. I give my cooking as birthday presents or if it's a housewarming then a beautiful bowl with my dip I make in it. The bowl is for them to keep after the dip is eaten. But I wouldn't have thought unless my mayo was in a crystal jar that mayo would be the perfect gift. Lol.
