How this work? Most households have an average of 2.5 children per household. How do you get a .5 kid?

??????

It's an AVERAGE. To get it, you divide the total number of children in your sample, say a town or a country, by the total number of homes in that same sample area. The result probably will not be a whole number, but that doesn't mean any kids need to be sawed in half! If a family has 3 children, and their neighbors have 2, they have 5 children between them, which is an average of 2.5 children each. Get it? :-)

maybe when they say .5 they mean that at the time, the parents have a child on the way? other than that I don't know. maybe it's a mistake in their statistics.
