If Sam was frodo's gardener, then how did he end up on the journey in the first place?

He was eavesdropping on the conversation between Frodo and Gandalf. Gandalf caught him and sent him with Frodo to keep Frodo safe. They may not show that in the movie but it's very clearly stated in the book.

I tried to read the hobbit but I found it quite boring. After watching all 3 movies straight, the books probably aren't that bad.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it. I read the hobbit for the first time when I was about 9. The other three soon after. I always enjoyed them. I haven't seen the new hobbit movie yet but if they do as decent a job as the did on the other three I'll probably enjoy it.
