At what age or circumstance does good manners allow one to stop giving Christmas gifts to one's children and/or grandchildren?

When it becomes a financial hardship, the love and time spent together is plenty. When times are tough, we often make Christmas about baking the cookies and decorating the tree. It is just as lovely a day.
My grandmother's age kept her from shopping. She would give us $5 and a small crocheted ornament. I cherish them. She passed at 100 in 2005.
