Would a .223 work for mountain lion hunting?

If so what round is good for the job? Or should I just break out my 12 ga with 00 buck?

.223 is otherwise known as 5.56X45 millimeter. It should work just fine, especially if its a semi-automatic weapon, just fire again.

I have a mini 14 so it will shoot .223 as well as 5.56. Any suggestions on ammo? I have heard nosler partitions are good but what grain?

I am not an ammunition specialist. Go for whatever is best for your rifling curve of the barrel, getting armor piercing ammunition might do more damage to internal organs and break through bones like twigs to incapacitate and kill it easily.

Armor piercing ammo will be illegal to hunt with.

Damn, maybe make simple, crude solid steel rounds at a reloading bench?

In most states its illegal to hunt with FMJ type ammo.

And NF, get rid of the mini 14 and get a better 223. Minis are fun ammo wasters but as far as hunting accuracy they are no good. A good hunting rifle will put 5 shots into a 1 inch square at 100 yards. The minis ate generally 3+ inches at 100.

You said "no clue what you just said" then "yes".
You could have just sent him on a knife hunt for a bear.
You really shouldn't be answering questions that involve life threatening situations.

I'd use the .223.
You don't want to use a shoty on a creature like that.
You want to drop'm with precision.

First, don't hunt them unless they're a threat. A 223 is fine and that is the round, 223. A 12 gauge with 00 buck will get you killed unless you're going after birds.

223 should be ok with say Hornady 55 grain soft points. Are you using dogs or calling them in?

Yeah I've hog hunted with 223.'s several times but I would imagine they'd be good for mountain lions.

Why would you hunt mountain lions? What did they do to you? Anyways. Yes.
