The scientific revolution occurred due to technological advancements' accelerating. As technology became more advanced, it became possible to spread knowledge, update existing technologies, and further innovate new ones. As communication and duplication of writing (i.e. the printing press) became faster and more accurate, the spread of knowledge increased, and advancement further accelerated. Today, innovation and invention occur at an astounding rate compared to the 1700's or even the 1900's, and continues to accelerate.
In laymen's terms, invention and innovation caused themselves to snowball.
The scientific revolution happened because Humans are naturally curious to understand what and why and how. The Church tried to contain all knowledge to what was written in the Bible, but observable facts soon had researchers seeking their OWN answers by direct observation. Once discovery was freed from the inhibiting influence of religion, the rate of change has accelerated immensely. And new facts fill in the gaps of old questions, leading to even better understanding. There is no end to this explosion of discovery, because we keep on finding more things we didn't know even existed!!!
