Is it true that praying and having a religion can save you, or whatever?

I've been to church a few times, and I've heard some religious people say that God saved them. Is that true? I don't believe, I'm just curious.

Report as

Not at all. Religion typically puts aside your insecurities and your problems with the world and yourself. But it doesn't completely do away with it. When they say god "saved" them, they mean that they had a moment of coincidence that happened to plenty of other people and to make themselves feel better they convince themselves some god cared about them.

Um not even close.

Actually it's very close. Religion tend to blind people and yours has done the same with you.
Report as
Hmmmm... I see. So my "coincidence" theories are right then?
Report as
@squally: yes, they are. the one thing common in most humans is that we don't like being told we're all just the same. we like to think there's importance in who we are and what we do in society. it's a coincidence but religion is designed to overexaggerate these coincidences.

Well, actually believe in something or someone or others make of life we have, the more you believe what you believe has great power the higher your willingness to live, i think...
well, i'ts up to you... this is your life, the others like me merely just an obstacle that may or may not help you along your life... and so in my life, or the life of others
this is actually my previous comment on someone asking did god really exist...

There is no evidence at this time that religion does anything other than make you feel better, and anything you make up will be just as effective as established religions.

It is all faith. No one really knows what lies beyond death. Religion is basically something to keep one from not worrying too much about death. The belief in a "heaven" or a perfect spirt world after death helps calm people down because the idea if death is quite mysterious and scary. I'm a Christian and I do believe, but this is my perspective on the idea of religion. So to answer your question...it all depends on your faith...do you believe that it saves you or not?

I've heard stories from people but I based it on a coincidence.

Religion is all based on faith, it could be coincidence, a simple theory, anything

Jesus is pretty clear about it. You should read the gospels.

It depends on if you are truthful about what you pray. If you are just saying the words, then no. If you truly believe in what you are saying, then, yes.

Well, despite popular belief, I don't think that the sinner's prayer can save you. I've always been taught that you had to have the Holy Ghost to be saved.

They could mean that in a few ways. First; they could mean that God saved their soul, which would be true right when you give your life to God, Second; they could be talking about God through the bible giving them guidance that potentially saved them from making a bad choice, and lastly; they could mean miraculously, I know a lot of people who were addicted to drugs and were miraculously drug free, or missionaries that were literally saved from being killed by the slightest bit. So I'm saying that these people at church aren't lying.

For some people, having a religion to believe in can help them be more positive. Having a beautiful afterlife, and structures to live their lives by can help to keep them focused, and like they have a purpose, and like they are a part of something by keeping them involved in the community. My grandma used to say that if she hadn't found god, she would have been a lot less happy. She used to hand her problems over to God, believing that he would help her fix them if she continued to pray to him, and be a good person, and made her feel relieved, like a weight off her shoulders. She used to also pray for protection, which made her feel safe. Also, She used to pray for help when she needed to find something she couldn't find, and then thank him when she found it. My Grandma used to pray for different saints for different things, I can't remember their names, but its similar to the greek beliefs of heaps of different gods. Just saints instead. My mum prays for a parking spot, and thanks him when she finds one..

Religion, in general, is a guidebook to living a good life - basically being selfLESS rather than being SELFISH. The people you were talking to were probably selfish people at one point in time and did know there was a better way to living by being selfless. Their religious conversion was acknowledging their selfish ways were actually self-destructive to their physical and mental well-being thus their admittance to "being saved."

There is a lot of controversy about what exactly it is that deems a person 'saved'. Some believe they just need to accept Jesus as their savior and just ask for it, and they will be granted it. They don't have to change anything (the choices they make)...they are definitively and infinitely "saved", and by being saved we have a non expiring ticket into heaven.

Then some believe that you can ask .. but simply accepting Jesus, is not enough...because of our imperfections we continue to falter in faith and don't adhere to 'the rules' throughout the rest of our lives.

I believe we can ask .. we can try to do our best and follow the Word as close as we can, make better choices in our lives, and at least attempt to live as 'clean' as possible, ask for forgiveness when we fail .. But we will never know if we are 'saved' at all .. until we are judged after we die.

I agree that there is no such thing as "once saved, always saved". Salvation is given to us by God's grace, but we need to maintain a daily walk with Christ. Being quick to repent when we do mess up shows humility and reverence. When a person asks for salvation, there will be evidence of change in their life. Good answer, bikergirl!

Thankyou Stevechrisman ... This is my personal conviction. I don't feel righeous in asking for 'salvation' and expecting it to just be gifted to me, just because I 'asked for it' .. I believe THAT is something you earn.

What I do ask for is guidance and influence .. so that someday, when the time comes .. I would be 'worthy' of it. But that's just me.

Maybe I understand it all wrong .. I can't say .. but logically, it just doesn't make sense to ask for such a gift .. and feel reliquenshed of all responsibility to remain worthy.

In my experience, when I encounter someone who claims to be saved .. I get such a sense of almost arrogance (due to a lack of a better word). I find it very disturbing...but, again that is just me. Although I can form my own opinion, it is not up to me to judge.

Save you from what is the question. Religions all claim you need to be saved from something so you'll buy into their "cure".

You realize there are religions other than yours? You pick the wrong one and you lose too.

Not to mention one cannot simply choose to believe something she finds absurd. There is plenty to lose- wasted time, wasted effort to please some imaginary being, when we only get a limited time to live.

There r thousands of religions out there, I am 99% sure you can find one that is for you. And think about it this way, even If it turns out to be fake, then what do you have to lose. Of course though, it isn't my place to judge anyone, so be who you are. : )
