do we become reclused after we get clean, except for dealing with other addicts?

I'm a recovering crack addict, go to work back home sometime a meeting. hard for me to make friends

i unfortunately smoked crack at 16 years old, i robbed and cheated and lied for the next two years, sold stuff i had no business selling and did a bunch of other stuff i would've never normally done to just stay high. i stopped smoking at 19-20 but unfortunately for the next 6-7 years i was magically drawn to other addicts. i wasn't even aware they were but it seemed like everyone i got tight with was a junkie. i'm 35 now and glad to say i can still pick out the junkies in a crowd but now i choose to just stay away from them, not because of them but because of me. i know it's nothing i can be around. to answer your question... you get a lot more social again, it just takes a while. good luck

Give it time. Making friends is hard for anyone, and takes time. I know it can be lonely, but don't give up.

John, i have my own social stigma. It is definitely hard to reintegrate with society. Friends will be difficult to come by. So when you get one, realize their importance and cherish them. If they have accepted you and all that comes with it, they are special. Treat them as such.
Sorry i can't tell you a secret way to make things easier.

I smoked it a few times.....seriously, I don't understand what the appeal is.....same thing with coke.....it was just....whatever to me.......as for holding someones past against them, well, I'm not as concerned with the past as I am with the present and future.....NOTHING can be done about choices already made, but we ALL ALWAYS have control over future choices, so it always boils down to the level of personal commitment that one puts forth.....

WOW!! That's awesome!! I don't think we all need to turn recluse after getting Clean and Sober, but sometimes after quitting we come to the realization of how wasteful of life we were while using and then feel guilty and "useless" to others, especially "normal" people, so we tend to find it easier to relate with others that have walked in our shoes. Like i just wrote in response to MBU, it should be the present and future that you and others are concerned with, so if you are still harboring feelings of "uselessness" then it's gonna be hard to interact with "normal" people, but they don't know the person you USED to be so you should have nothing to worry about there. If I am rambling or off-base, then just tell me to shut up....

i've been a good boy for 5 plus years but i think if i were around it i would have a tough time saying no so i really need to make an effort to keep away from the situation

i'm very lucky too, that i have a lovely lady friend who's seen me at my absolute worst but through sheer confusion on her part she thought she saw some sort of redeeming quality in me...shhh, don't tell her i have none.

MBU, see, at least you know that about yourself......there are a lot of people that would throw them self into a situation thinking they were in control, only to fall right back into it......

john, good luck to you and it gets easier the longer you go without it

MrBU -- Eh... I beg to differ...
You know it's still not funny to me, but I do have to laugh at some of the sheer craziness & stupidity, but literally trying to keep you alive & struggling w/ whether or not to call an ambulance was never "amusing" & never will be... those were some reeeaaally bad times.
Anyway, just happy you're steering clear of the shn!t now; much easier on both of us. :)
