Why can't Americans adopt Russian children?

I was just listening to the news and it said something about making it illegal for Americans to adopt Russians???

Report as

There have been a few incidences where American families adopt a Russian child only to discover the child has severe and dangerous mental illnesses - so they sent the child back.

It's like buying overseas fruit and veggies, the stuff grown in your own country is just soo much better I guess.

The Russians are going to stop the adoption of their children by US family's, this is in response to the gun violence we have here (or so they say) More likely its just another volley in the ongoing political war between us.

Personally, I am in favor of Russia keeping their children and finding families for them in the country. Less traumatic on the children, and Russia can maintain more control over the placement. About 1000 children were placed in 2011; a large number were placed by private religious organizations like CWA ( see http://www.cwa.org/russia-adoption.htm )
As has been mentioned, the policy review has been because several children were returned from USA as their mental problem was discovered. Medical backgrounds on Russian children can be quite spotty. Considering the recent problems, this may be a good resolution for all parties except the children.

My daughter has 2 Russian girls that were adopted by someone else. They disrupted the adoption and my daughter took them. I also have a friend who has an adopted Russian boy. It's interesting to note that they all have similar mental problems . Both families are doing an excellent job with them

As of yesterday it became Russian law, Americans cannot adopt Russian children. The ground swell did begin in Russia after several unfortunate incidents involving adopted children. However the president of Russia, Putin and his supporters, took up the cause in retaliation for the the United States banning admittance to the US of Russian citizens accused of "human rights" violations. Simply put, it is not the welfare of the children but a political, a-la-cold war, move. There are thousands upon thousands of children right here in the US up for adoption. But for various reasons it has become easier, less expensive, and less traumatic (for the adopting family) to adopt overseas. I do not advocate not adopting children from other countries but if you want to adopt try, make an honest attempt, to adopt here in the states first. Just reading "Ask" you can get an idea how many unwanted pregnancies "pop up" each week.
