Why is it ok to lie to anyone, but not a cop? It's not like I'm under oath or anything.

Please don't get started on the morals of why I shouldn't lie to anyone, cop or not. My question is about the legal aspect of it.

If a cop asks you questions, the only time you would even contemplate lying, is if you were doing something wrong. So stop doing things wrong, then you'd never HAVE to lie to a cop. Pretty simple to me. Only times I have had to deal with cops, is when I get pulled over for speeding. Not like I can tell a cop "Sorry Officer but I wasn't speeding". They have proof ya know?

Thanks for being honest! I've always taught my cops that we were a deterrent to crime, traffic or otherwise! If an a$$chew, or warning was warranted to slow a speeder down, so be it! Sometimes you have to write the ticket to get the point across, but never do an a$$chew, and a ticket, one our the other, never both!

You're welcome :) And that's mighty nice of you. For the most part I've just gotten a ticket when I get pulled over. But I'm a Jeff Gordon, on the roads. I mean, used to be. I've grown up a lot and don't really speed anymore. Worse crime I've ever committed.

Probably not a good idea to lie to the police. They will find a way to use it against you.

It's not okay to lie to anyone. The cop can just arrest you if he catches you doing it.

Lying to a cop could be taken several criminal ways:
False reporting: felony
Interfering with a government agency, misdemeanor
Contempt of cop: non criminal challenge to make them dig deeper into your lies!

LEO's deal with lies everyday, many times a day and most are very good at "sniffing" them out. There's no law about lying to an officer, though you could be cited for obstruction of justice in some cases. The main reason you shouldn't is because it's a sign of disrespect and an angry LEO may go out of his way to "stack" infractions upon you.

Sorry, but there certainly are laws prohibiting lying to law enforcement officers.

It is against the law to make a false statement to a police officer. As a society, we want people to tell the police the truth so they can get on to other, more important things instead of hunting down the truth about your fine self!

It depends on what you are lying about. If you are lying in response to investigative questions (like whether your brother was at home last night), it might be considered obstruction of justice. If you are lying about something else (like why you were going 70 mph), it is not technically a crime.
