So my sister and her friend wanna lose about forty pounds in about 6-8 months.

They plan on eating healthy and calorie counting. They also want to go to the gym and work out at home 6 days a week for over and hour. I was wondering whats the shortest amount of time they can do this in or is this a reasonable time frame. Any suggestions are highly appreciated too.

It is possible. A pound a week is a good goal, and what they are proposing is a little more than that. The catch is as they are working out, they are also gaining muscle mass which weighs more than fat tissue, so they might not "lose the weight" but they are losing the fat. So they should not get discouraged if they start to plateau towards the end of their timeline.

Here's something for them to consider - hypnosis. I work with a lot of weight management clients and hypnosis is a great aid to losing weight. The reason diets don't work is because it's a punishment - you have to give up something you want. Well, what if you didn't want that second helping? What if you didn't want fattening fast foods? What if you didn't want that desert or late night snack? It's just a matter of changing your mind and hypnosis does that. You're not on a diet - you are doing a life style change. That exercise will become fun and a motivation. That healthy diet will become enjoyable and you won't be missing anything because you don't want what you don't want. Have them give a local hypnotherapist a call and discuss it. They be happy about the decision to do so.

its possible if you do it that way, but inefficient, that is actually an ineffective workout, try this first and see if you like it, this is called afterburn training, when you do this, it causes your body to continue to burn fat for up to forty-eight hours after you quit working out. count your calories and do go beyond about 1800 a day, and do thirty minutes (only thirty minutes, this is important) of intense cardio, you want your heart rate to be super high at the end, and you want to be gasping for air. this short time high intensity is approximatly twice as effective as long time low intensity, you will start seeing results in fat loss in 3-6 weeks and you will start building lean muscle if you eat right. so you could actually lose forty pounds in about 3-6 instead of 6-8 months with this
