a well oiled brain. its hard work. not to mention it could be hours of figuring out why it won't start or run right before you even start to take it apart so you can it put it back together with new parts

Snap On is the best, but is totally unnecessary and very overpriced for the average person, its mostly used by professional mechanics. Craftsman is the best choice for the average person, but still not necessary. Most important is a socket set, if you think you may only be driving import cars then you only need metric sockets and wrenches, for american cars buy SAE. Then you also need wrenches screwdrivers and misc pliers. There are many other tools that will eventually be needed, but you can figure that out as you go.
