A "maid" is a servant. A cleaning lady is an employee. Most people would rather be considered an employee than a servant.

It's on her birth certificate.
Because her first name is "The", middle name is "Cleaning", last name is "Lady". Duh.
maybe she thinks its less disrespectful or politically incorrect.. in reality it doesnt matter eitherway
Probably because being a maid includes other duties, such as making &/or bringing you a drink/food, whereas a 'cleaning lady' is usually hired purely to clean, nothing more.
If it bothers you (and it sounds like it does) why don't you just ask your Mother if you can call the "cleaning person" by her name, or something else you and she are comfortable with? Would your Mother object if you were to ask the "cleaning person" what SHE would like to be called?
Maid makes it sound like your so much better than her when your equal
Maybe She Just Thinks It's More Proper To Call Her The Cleaning Lady Instead Of Maid.
She probably thinks it sounds more respectful.
I don't know...if I could afford a cleaning lady I would call her .....My Miracle Worker.
Well for one that's mean. Call her by her proper name for one. Cleaning lady is bc she's a lady that cleans your house. And gets paid for it too, she needs respect and being called a cleaning lady probably doesn't sound to good. BTW that sounds like a good thing to ask your MOM not us
It's more respectful and shows much more taste.
unless this person is there everyday cleaning and other work than "maid" is a politically incorrect term that this person might be offended to.
I thought you said you were 39
Because consuela doesn't like being referred to as a maid duh
This is a troll. Read his profile and see all the lame questions he asked that were deleted by the mods.
Because she has no other choice. Is your mom rude to her or just normal.
maid sounds too mean. i call ours the cleaning lady
Call her by name. Treat others the way you wanted to be treated.
I think all kindergartners learn this and we forget that motto as we grow older...:)
