Are famous sports athletes paid too much?

I think some athletes are paid too much. I think football and golf players are paid way too much. baseball and basketball I think are ok as far as earnings... baseball players play 168 games not including playoffs. and basketball I think has like 82.

Doctors are complaining that entertainers make more money than them hitting a ball or whatnot while they are saving lives..

We pay more for entertainment, than we do for education. The answer is yes. Athletes are paid more than teachers. Shouldn't this say something about America?

I don't appreciate little kids cussing at me online. So I'm not even going to waste my time saying anything back to you. Happy new year kid.
Report as
Im no little kid. Im 25 and your ignorance really bothered me. You cant compare incomes of public and private employees as a private employee will almost always make more money because they bring in money to their company. Where as a public employee doesnt bring in any money and only keep the machine running.
Report as
Except, without teachers we would have nothing. We wouldn't have athletes, doctors, actors, etc. So in away, they all relate. Sorry to NEED to point out the obvious.
Report as
But they dont all relate you either are a great athlete or you are not its the same with actors no one can teach you to be great you just are. You could never attend one day of school never learn to read or write and still end up the highest paid athlete in the world. Plus this is about incomes and it seems that you cant refute my argument on why athletes are paid more than teachers.
Report as
Again, like I previously said, I'm not going to waste my time arguing with a child.
Report as
Like I said Im 25. And i can tell by the way you now refuse to have a debate is that you cant refute my arguments and decided to take your ball and go home. Metaphorically of course.

Football has salary caps so only the extremely popular people are paid a ton of money because it is not possible for everyone to earn millions of dollars. Baseball has no cap so I would argue they actually get paid more for what they do. I think they are all paid a ton of money for what they do, but then again, I wouldn't want to be a football player in my 40s after suffering multiple concussions and other injuries.

Absolutely not. Athletes are paid by us the fans. The more we watch, the more we buy tickets, merchandise means more money. You ever wonder why Yankee players get paid alot of money. Yankee hats most bought hat at MLB.com and other places that sells hats. Top 5 in American League in average attendance multiple that by highest cost to attend a game = alot of money. Duh

Wow, you really couldn't be more off. Athletes are paid by **television** companies, by **broadcasting companies**, not by selling a few thousand hats. Hah! Merchandising being the *smallest* revenue generator in most major sports, whereas the broadcast rights are worth billions.
Report as
Athletes are paid by the fans that watch.... The fans buy tickets and the money goes to the owner and the owner buys the players
Report as
Check the numbers...TV contracts are worth billions, and arenas only seat maximum 20,000. At a conservative estimate, there are only 75% of the tickets sold on any given night, so that's 15,000. Average of 50 bucks a ticket gets you $750,000, assuming the team owner gets to keep all that money - they don't. To make a billion would mean this would have to happen a little over 1300 times - and there aren't that many games in the NBA.

They are paid way too much. This has been a big issue of mine for awhile now. I am a big fan of baseball, football, and basketball, but I am in personal boycott and refused to watch now because of this issue. Professional sporting events were first started to create revenue for the community, but the money has been sucked into the game and paid to the players and owners. I say have a salary cap of $250,000 for all sports, and tax the heck out of the owners. Sports will suffer for awhile but those who love to play and those who love to watch will stick around or come back.

**Love** your idea, put a salary cap on the players and we'd see far less corruption in college football as well as less resentment for "earning" so much. And signing bonuses? Don't get me started!

No question. I do admit that they should be paid well for being able to perform at a high level and when you look at it many athletes have a relatively short playing career, especially in football, so you can argue that they deserve every dollar.

I'm a huge baseball fan and looking at the contracts that were signed this offseason for mediocre players makes me sick. 100 million dollar contracts to PLAY any sport is just nuts. Lets not forget it is a game, no matter how gifted or talented, that's a kings ransom for "working" half a year.

Let me see, you get to travel all over the country for free, free hotels, free food, no work clothes and a fat salary......I wish we all had it that easy.

I remember reading an article not too long ago about this very question. I disagreed with it but the main point was that athletes are paid such high salaries because they have such a unique skill set. Teachers get paid jack because (the article assumed) practically anyone can teach. Brain surgeons, on the other hand, are few and far between, so they can demand more for their skill set. Then again, how do you compare a brain surgeon with a quarterback? One of them saves or improves people's lives, whilst the other merely entertains them.

Anyone can teach as long as they go to college not everybody can be a pro athlete.
Report as
I think that was the gist of the article I was trying to recall. While practically anyone can be *qualifited* to teach, it takes a special person to be a good one!

It is all market driven. If the team does well due to the players efforts, it will make money - to which the player is entitled to a "larger" cut of. The dig is when they land a large long-term contract, then become "unprofessional," and have sub-par (for what people expect from that player's) performance.

They are not paid too much, the people pay money to see them play so they deserve it. Anyone can go into the military, law-enforcement, firefighting or whatever. Just like any other career, they work to get better at it. The NFL is a business, They pay the players to be on their team because they are good at that sport. It's as simple as that, they play and people pay to watch. They have trained for years on end and have dedication to do that. They are the best at what they do. Doctors are important and save lives, they get paid... There aren't spectators that pay to watch. If you people are jealous and think they don't deserve it and you do somehow, get your ass up and beat them at that sport. Not everyone can run a 4.4 and those that do and that are good at football get paid. Im guessing all of you that think they are are democraps
