If people picture heaven is laying in a field listening to people play the harp...

...then why dont they just hire a harp player now to follow them into a field? Why wait till they die?

You're making an assumption that I'm not sure is correct. I think most people have a different vision of Heaven and all its Glory. But let me answer you're question from the financial aspect, since this is what you're asking about. This is approximately what it would cost to hire a harpist. They're pretty expensive.
The location of the event will usually dictate the price for harpists. On average, a harpist will charge anywhere from $200 to $2,000 per event that lasts around 4 to 6 hours.
Some may charge on an hourly basis rather than a per-event basis. This price can range from $50 to $200 per hour, with a 4 hour minimum required.
Pretty expensive just to go into a field and lay in the grass, don't you think?

Mr.john........well howdy there. Looking forward to the New Year. I'm going to go to an all you can eat Sizzler salad bar (with steak). So my sis and brother-in-law and I are going to bring in the New Year stuffing our faces.....the same thing we did on Christmas. Lol
Hope you have a nice New Year 2013. Couldn't be any worse than 2012, right? Lol

I think you maybe missing the meaning behind the picture. It is not the harp and the laying in the field that is wanted. it is the peace and tranquility that is desired. Though you mention one possible manifestation of this desire, I would dare say there are thousands, if not millions more. Here on earth we have responsibilities and turmoil, I am not saying that there is none in heaven (I don't know), but comparatively speaking most would imagine there will be a lot less, if any at all. So, it is not the harp and field that is wanted, rather the peace and tranquility. God bless.

People can picture it as anything they want i suppose. Not sure where the whole harp thing came from
Except that the lyre, a small harp like instrument, was popular in biblical days. And i thought it was clouds, not a field. Laying on clouds could be dangerous.
