Soffit is the outside exposed edge of a building that faces the ground. fascia is the outside exposed edge of the building that faces vertically. Fascia and Soffit are at the edge of the roof on a building. At the edge of a roof the fascia is the outside edge you see, and the Soffit is the underside of the overhang of the roof.
Soffit is a material that is used to form a ceiling from the outer house wall. The material used is normally screwed or nailed to look out rafters. Soffit is an Italian word that means to fasten something from underneath.

The Soffit is made from one or more of several materials. It is normally vented to allow for the hot air accumulated in the attic area above the finished ceilings to be cycled through convection. The soffit material is fastened to the underside of the overhanging rafter tails and is trimmed with a Fascia board that is attached to the exposed ends of the rafter tails. Both the soffit and fascia serve not only to be pleasing to the eye but to deny entry to the attic area by pests, birds, squirrels, etc.
