'The Hobbit' Movie Question? *SPOILER*

When watching 'The Hobbit' my friend and I have come into a small debate,I was hoping for the opinion of everyone. At the end a bird hits an object against the wall, here's my friends theory: The bird hit the stone to warn the dragon.

My Theory is: The bird was smashing a snail against the wall to rack the sheel and accidentally woke the dragon.

I didn't see the movie but have read the book many times. In the book the bird was a sign. My memory of it is a little hazy but it went something like "When the thrush knocks in the setting sun of Durin's Day...". It was at this time that a keyhole appeared in the bare rock of the mountain. Thorin's key opened the lock revealing a secret entrance into the mountain, an entrance too small and narrow to be guarded by Smaug.

The bird was knocking a snail against the wall to eat it. I don't think it was warning the dragon. The answer above sounds right too
