No, Christmas was hijacked by the church. It was originally saturnalia.

Lets see...2000 years ago the first Christian Emperor of Rome declared it to be the day Christians would celebrate the birth of CHRIST. Then the Catholic Church began to observe CHRIST's Mass (ChristMas, see the parallel here?) Sooooo for 2000 years or more it has been, for Christians, about Christs birth. Unfortunately worldly purposes grew parallel to and then overlapping religious observances. So yes, for Christians, it is about Christs birth first, then its about family and peace and giving and all things good as well.

Jesus wasn't actually born in December, but that is when it is celebrated. The celebrations go on because a long time ago there was a Pagan festival so they made it Christian.
