I am reminded of a saying. If you want to control a group of people, tell them a scary story. It worked for the republicans who passed the patriot act with ease. It worked when they sold us on their made up war in Iraq. I think this is a bid by the GOP to frighten people back onto their side. After alienating everyone except the very rich, in the 2012 elections they are now at a crossroads. They have the reality that people are no longer buying into their same old spin, and their solution is to come up with new spin. So now they are saying that the economic repairs will do more damage than the damage they did under Bush's misleadership. As usual this is just another spin by the GOP, designed to serve their actual agenda.
All the fiscal cliff is is a whole lot of austerity and tax hikes at once. It'll be very bad in the short term as it will likely cause another recession. In the long term however all of that extra tax revenue (that isn't supporting the unemployed during the aforementioned recession) will go to the national deficit and perhaps even paying off our debts.
So it could be a very, very good thing for our future generations! just not ours...
It's just another scare. The current GOP likes to scare people, it keeps them in line. But don't worry, not even the GOP want to raise taxes on the middle class. Even if tax are raised, congrats on having a normal tax rate for once after decades of low and finally contributing to debt reduction. Proving once again, the trickling down effect does not exist.
