Were Hobbits made for Lord of the Rings or were they already created?

JRR Tolkein created them for the series. He and his friend CS Lewis, of Narnia fame, were both writing fantasies in a friendly competition.

Thanks! I think everyone agrees lotr is more successful with movies video games and all! I loved the Hobbit!

JRR Tolkiene actually came up with the lotr series as a bed time story for his kids. the hobbit came after.
