Help with a dog, she's a pug. Read info

yesterday my boyfriends brother found a pug. I absolutely adore pugs! I could not pass her up. about a month ago my boyfriends sister said she had a friend that had a pug they didn't want and they were trying to get rid of her. anyway, my questions are; 1) How can you tell how old she is? she has a small amount of grey on her face but she is pretty small and hyper. 2) Why would she have huge knots under her skin? they're really big, there's only two. someone said maybe her owners mistreated her. she was really skinny and dirty and thirsty when we found her, but we don't know what the knots could be. 3) I totally don't want to give her back especially if i suspect animal cruelty, so if we end up keeping her will she respond to a new name? thank you

i'm not a vet. check teeth. worn, yellow etc. with inflamed gums? she could be older.small dogs are pron to bad teeth. the muzzle greying would indicate she is older. knots (vet conformation), could be cysts. cysts can be drained. if you can gently get your fingers under them and you don't feel a "root" then they could be cysts. cysts would also indicate an older dog. pugs have oily skin and would be prone to cysts. so if they are cysts, it does not mean the dog has been mistreated. a vet is definitely needed. also, check with your local animal shelter. but if it is like my state, it is law you notify the shelter you found the dog - in case someone is looking for her. i believe after a certain number of days, she's yours. you might check with a local rescue group and see what the guidelines are. you wouldn't want its owner grieving. also, yes, she will respond to a new name. just make sure you reward her when she responds. and it does not have to be food, just physical contact will make her more than happy. good luck. ps - good for you to same this little baby.

You're getting good advice here. Whatever her new name is, be sure to use it when you feed her. Let her see you put the food down and call her by her new name especially then.

I love your heart! Rescue this poor little girl, let a vet look her over. I have adopted only rescued dogs for the past two decades...they will come to a new name in a short time if you start by combining the new name with the old one and gradually drop the old one. My last rescue was Belle, I named her Maggie Belle and when she responded to that, I started calling her Maggie--no problem. Bless your heart. What happened to the one that was no longer wanted?
