There are quite a number of low maintenance pets that you can consider. Some ideas include hamsters, fish, rabbits, cats, some birds or Guinea pigs. Read http://ohmyapt.apartmentratings.com/5-low-maintenance-pets-to-consider.html for more.

Rodents can be hard to take care of. You need to put in a lot of time and effort to gain trust and be able to handle them for bathing, nail clipping.. Guinea pigs especially are lots of work. They're skiddish and their trust needs to be earned. You have to be able to handle them for nail clipping, bathing, taking them out for excerise, and taking them out of the cage for cleaning. They also need unlimited access to fresh pellets, water, hay, and things to chew on. They need daily veggies and attention. They are very good pets, I have two myself, but they are a lot of work for such a small animal.

lots of people say mum, i say mum. She didn't say that her mum needed a pet, she said she would enjoy a pet easy to take care of when she is home but when she is not, her mum would easily be able to take care of it.

holidays are only about 5 days a year..the "pet" would really be a stranger..
