I am building a dog house and don't want to look stupid when i go buy the wood

Yep, good answer... I didn't see it was for a doghouse before answering. One doesn't really need precuts for a doghouse :P

2x4s come in various lengths and are cut at the lumber yard to fit your exact measurements. So go prepared and you'll look like a pro.

Ok, the lumber yards I've shopped at are just like any other store except they sell wood. You can walk around looking at the signs for a 2x4s. Or just ask to be pointed in that direction. Bring your measurements so you can get everything cut to size, saving you from a lot of sawing.

Oh, you asked where. They will have an area set up with industrial saws. Sol all you have to do is ask.

You can get many lengths. The most used are 93 1/4 inches (called "precut" studs) 8 feet, 10 feet, 12 feet, 16 feet, some lumberyards will sell 82 1/2 inch precuts for jackposts

Crazy has it, mostly. 2x4's come in even foot numbers usually. 6, 8, 12, 16, & 20 I beleive
