How do I love people and forgive people without being a doormat?

What I'm asking is how do I being a christian love people and forgive them over and over again, and turn the other cheek when people do hurtful things to me without laying down like a rug, and just letting people take a walk??

You can forgive but you don't have to forget. You have to love and forgive yourself as well. Some people you just have to say, "I love you, and when you prove to me that you have changed for the better I will be glad to help. Until then I will not enable you to hurt me or others."

It seems that you misunderstand. It's not like you should keep users in your life. If the people in your life don't value you then you don't associate with them. You should forgive people but you don't have to open yourself to the same abuses from the same people. Just keep people that you can trust in your life and forgive but let go of the people that don't respect you.

Be strong in Christ. Teach people how to treat you. You can forgive them, & at the same time teach them to never do it again, because it hurt you, by reprimanding them, taking time away from them, etc. Show them that they won't get to be in you life if they keep repeating the hurt. At the same time being fully forgiving, when they do change.

You do it though the power of the Holy Spirit. To many times we try to do things out of our own strength. Give it to God and He will help you. God Bless!

Correct, James, you have to give it to God. I know I can't do it in my flesh!

Hi CV,as a Christian we live by values that a lot of people will say are out-dated, non-existent and not beneficial in the type of world we live in today. However, like Christ, we are not here to please man; we are here to please Jehovah, the God of Bible (Ps 83:18).
CV, as a Christian, you probably have said the Lord's prayer often, especially the part that talks about forgiveness (Matt 6:14,15). You see, this scripture is telling us that in order for God to forgive us of our daily sins, then he has to know that we have a willing heart to forgive others. So, CV, regardless of how the person you have forgiven acts or treat you, its really not about how they respond to you, but its about how forgiving your heart is. However, I am not saying to lay down and take the footprints, because even Jesus had to take a stand against those who were doing illegal things in his Father's house (Matt 21:12.13). But don't let others take away your christian qualities because even if they don't value them, Jehovah God will. Also, see the article below for more help. Contact me with questions.

Forgive them. Then don't be a door mat. I do not repeat the same mistake. That would make me a fool.

C.V. , I would start this new way of walking in forgiveness by building up my confidence in what God says about it. Look up the Bible verses concerning forgiveness. Write the ones that speak to you on paper and tape them to your mirrors. That way you'll see them everyday, and eventually memorize them. They will become 'written on your heart', you will learn to believe in forgiveness , and then learn to walk in forgiveness. Why don't you ask the Ask community to give you some verses that speak to them. You'll surely find one or two you like, and you'll have what you need to be on your way! Best wishes, I think you're seeking a way to find some peace in this life on this crazy planet, and I think you'll find it too! Bye! Beth

You don't hold a grudge if they apologize. When someone asks for forgiveness you must give it because the measure you use to judge others is the same one that will be used on you. Same goes with how merciful you are. If someone obviously isn't sorry, you can't really forgive them...
