Based on what happened in Connecticut, Should the government have more control over weapons in order to reduce crime?

I have that assignment :(

Report as

No matter what laws they pass, no matter how many people protest, no matter what. The government will not be able to toughen gun control no matter how hard they try. It is like drugs. If somebody wants it bad enough, they will find a way to get it.

Well, honestly you don't need guns to commit murder. You can easily use a bat, or a hammer. Remember when Hitler took away guns? ( you probably don't remember. :p)

Hitler didn't take guns away and he had no need besides. He was popularly elected. And really, even without Godwin's Law, references to him (and wrong ones at that) seem pretty desperate.

Okay...thanks I guess.

stricter gun control has been proven over and over not to stem crime but to increase it, as only those guns that are illegal are out there, and the legal weapons regular people use to protect themselves are unavailable to them.

i agree with swsinri answer. And frankly i am tired of everytime someone commits a horrible crime like a mass shooting they are written off to be mentally ill in order to get a lighter sentence. We need to start just giving the death penalty PERIOD! NO EXCUSES! They were sane enough to take lives so i say "EYE FOR AND EYE! LET THEM FACE THIER MAKER JUST LIKE THOSE VICTIMS LIVES THAT WERE TAKEN...TO CLAIM MENTAL ILLNESS IS TO EASY FOR THEM!

Proven over and over? Nonsense. Cite something credible.

Yes, but really would it reduce gun sales. What about hunters, the need it to hunt to that deer don't over populate. And if it happened criminals would get more guns because they don't like to follow the rules. And there are more weapons that guns so it wouldn't reduce crime. They can use a knife too so really crime would stay the same. They can use any object so it won't change. Actually it might get higher.

No! They shouldn't because i believe it was the person( a very sick and mental person) not the gun! People are just mad a selfish cause people died. I mean yeah, it was a tragedy, but you don't gotta be that way. The world is sick!

I think we need to take a step back and look at who can have possession of assault weapons in their homes. This would certainly take the numbers down.

Well, for your assignment you can start by comparing the US to countries that have strict gun control laws. Statistically speaking, increased gun control = decreased gun violence, as it's been proven over and over again in multiple places. All the statistics are readily available online. You can also decide if you want to advocate for a multiple part approach too (better screening and background checks, better mental health services, etc).

Ironic then that swsrini is claiming that gun control does the opposite, though I suspect he's blowing smoke.
Report as
I'm totally cool with people hunting (I know a lot of very responsible gun owners) but even I can't deny the stats that more control does mean fewer instances of violence.

Swsniri is exactly right. Criminals will ALWAYS find ways around 'gun control'.. after all, they ARE criminals.

The CT shooter wasn't a criminal until he got the gun (from his gun-nut mom) so your attempt at logic fails badly. Most gun murders are committed not as street crime but in domestic circumstances with people who wren't previously violent criminals at all.
Report as
So your solution to this problem would be what?
Report as
And by the way, my 'attempt at logic' is exactly right. Hmmm...let's see, if a nutcase/criminal type had a choice to break into my home and harm my family, knowing I own a weapon, or break into house that doesn't have a weapon.. Which do you suppose he would chose? You dolt.
Report as
Said it below. Start with a very broad definition of assault weapons and bans on them as a start. There *is* no solution dealing with just the guns because there will continue to be husbands murdering wives and vice versa as long as they can get even a simple revolver. A complete ban (though ideal) couldn't be implemented here so start with just the most powerful weapons that can be used on many people in a short period. For me that would include a lot of semi-automatics.

Also longer waiting periods, stiffer gun rule penalties, ending gun show loopholes, ties to mental health databases, etc.

Nor is just dealing with the gun itself enough since we've been dumping mentally ill people on the streets and not providing mental health access widely. Even easily accessible family counseling would help since a lot of this is inter-family. Angry neighbors and road rage... much harder to deal with although not having a gun readily available might decrease those incidents, too.

Also, it'd be nice if Congress wasn't totally bought off.
Report as
Nutcase and criminals are different so that logic fails, too. Maybe you can put a sticker on the door saying you own weapon. People who don't own weapons could do the same. There's no reason to think a "nutcase" who is better armed and has the advantage of being awake would care about either.

Burglars generally don't come armed and case the house so they know you aren't there. Home invaders generally come armed, maybe better than you and they have that advantage. I know you want to think you'd win any gun battle like the good guy in the movies does but life doesn't work that way.

You are more likely statistically to use your gun against a neighbor or family member. Nobody who's done that wanted to believe that, yet it happened.

i think we just messed up our own country and we cant fix it.
some people say put an armed teacher in school- what if the teacher does it?
some say have an armed guard- what if someone kills the guard? now he has more power
some say stop guns- that leaves people open to people who use illegal guns
some say mental health- how are we going to target everyone?
some say leave gun control how it is- it is horrible how it is

we just have to many crazy people, that if they want to harm, they will.
i think we cant fix this, we have to fix the people, look at other country, they dont have this many messed up citizens, i think we should find what makes us different, and fix it.

People that commit these types of crimes are getting away to easy with the mental illness plea. i say death penalty bottom line! If they are THAT MENTAL THEN THEY DONT DESERVE TO LIVE IN SOCIETY...PERIOD!

It's not a matter of "more control". It's a matter of passing better laws. And yes, they should starting with the broadest possible definition of assault weapons.

Look at the person behind the gun. Was he insane? was he bullied as a child? did he hate the world? Did he have bad grades? Did someone make him do it? i think we have to stop the person not the gun.

One of the parents of a child that was killed gave a speech saying what this country really needs is to put prayer back in schools. The government is trying to take God out of our lives more and more, which totally goes against what our forefathers intended. He expressed it much more eloquently than I did... I'll try to find his name on fb so you can read it.
okay... it was posted by Dennis Peace, on Dec 18. Darrell Scott, father of Rachel who was killed at Columbine, addressed the House Judiciary Committee at a special session of Congress. Mr. Scott wrote a beautiful poem... wish I typed well enough to copy the whole thing. see if you can find it, it's very moving!
