'My mom always told me the key to life was happiness. At school, the teacher asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I said 'happy'. He told me I didn't understand the question. I told him he didn't understand life.' -John Lennon
I feel that 'God' (or whoever you credit- like your parents, and their parents etc.) gave us our lives so that we may appreciate it to its best potential. By this, I mean being a kind person and making a positive contribution to our society (whether it be small deeds like giving things away, or something large like an invention that will benefit future generation on a larger scale). I do believe however, that in order to feel satisfied with your own life personally, it is importand to FIRST and FOREMOST learn to appreciate the fact the you are hear on this Earth, becuase it is rather a miraculous thing (out of all the spermies, your little one made it, and managed to flourish into a healthy baby). And learning to appreciate your life, and accept the personality to have ended up with so far- and actually enjoy it, is a powerful; thing, that can improve the quality of your life until the day you die. It doesn't sit well with me that we were given this life we have, but choose not to enjoy it (ie. depression, taking your own life, damaging it through substance abuse etc). :)
It is my personal belief that the meaning of life is to discover our relationship to God and the Universe. To discover the truth of our relationship to our fellow human beings and other living things. To demonstrate what God is by reflecting Him in our daily lives.

Their is the side that says life is for you to do what you like, to give you a shot at having a good time. Then there is the side that claims science explains it all. unfortunately there is no amazing, obvious answer. We are just, here. I believe in the first side:)
