There is an old saying that says if you want to control a group of people tell them a scary story. Is there any story more frightening than eternal suffering? Christianity and Islam are big on the join us or else philosophy. Anyone who is not one of them will be subject to their ideal of eternal punishment. But not all religions teach that there is a place of eternal punishment to any who do not buy into their beliefs. According to Christians everyone but Christians goes to hell. According to Muslims everyone who is not Muslim goes to hell. They claim to worship the same god. Does their God reward one servant, and eternally punish the other? And which one does he reward and which does he condemn? Can they both be right? Or are they both wrong? And what of every other religion practiced since the time when people invented religion? Are they all going to eternal punishment because Islam and Christianity had not yet been invented?

See I feel like I cant really answer this question fully without kinda explaining my own weird views on hell... I mean, Jews apparently dont believe in Hell and Jesus himself only hints at it... so I wonder where the idea of Hell comes from. I mean, if you're a good person, aren't you doing the work of the Lord whether knowingly or not?okay I'm gonna stop there 'cause I'll ramble and start saying stupid stuff I dont mean... long story short, you dont want to risk it either way, so pick up a Bible.
Edit: sorry if I come off as ignorant but it's something I'm still thinking about myself.
Only God can judge who goes to Hell and who goes to Heaven. But rejecting God probably doesn't help. Some other answerers will try to state rules, others will tell you that God isn't narrow minded etc... As if that makes it okay to ignore God's call. You are probably hearing God calling you now which is why you asked this question. Listen to your soul and try to discern how you can walk with God and you'll be on your way to a state of grace.
The Bible tells us that we must accept by faith that God exists. Hebrews 11:6 says that without faith "it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him." God is spirit (John 4:24) so He cannot be seen or touched. Unless God chooses to reveal Himself, He is invisible to our senses (Romans 1:20). The Bible declares that the existence of God can be clearly seen in the universe (Psalm 19:1-4), sensed in nature (Romans 1:18-22), and confirmed in our own hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Agnostics are unwilling to make a decision either for or against God's existence. It is the ultimate "straddling the fence" position. http://www.gotquestions.org/agnosticism.html

I will give you a quote that made my mom feel better when I told her I was a non believer.
Catholic Archbishop George Pell of Australia was on a talk show. He was asked if he thinks atheist/agnostic people will go to hell. Here is his response:
From a christian point of view, god loves everybody. every genuine motion toward the truth is a motion toward god. when an atheist dies, like everybody else, they will be judged on the extent of which they have moved toward goodness and truth and beauty. in the christian view, god loves everybody except those who turn their back on him through evil acts. (interviewer asks:) so atheism is not an evil act? (bishop responds:) no, in most cases it's not. It's a motion toward the truth. (interviewer:) is it possible for an atheist to go to heaven? (bishop:) i would say certainly. Certainly.
10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. 11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. 12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. Romans 14:10-12 Jews believe in God -not Jesus Christians believe in God & Jesus Atheists do not believe in either Agnostics are not sure Islam believes in Allah And it goes on ..... As it says above: when Christ returns: every knee shall bow & every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord. God will make the decision.
Since agnosticism is a position on knowledge not belief it is irrelevant.
Agnosticism means you don't think it is possible to prove a god exists or that the position is inherently unknowable. All agnostics are also atheists or theists- meaning they don't think it can be proven but also either do or do not believe in a god.
Many Christians are also agnostic, just as most atheists are also agnostic.

Man is not responsible for his thoughts. As the heart beats, so the brain thinks. And yet we are to be condemned for our beliefs! Then why doesn't God give all of us the evidence? Must I be false to my understanding? They say: "When you come to die you'll be sorry if you do not." Will I be sorry because I did not live a hypocrite? Will I be sorry that I did not say I was a Christian when I was not? Won’t God forgive men for being honest?
Even assuming the existence of god, the dogma of hell is immoral, cruel, foolish and pure filth invented by the followers of a most merciful Christ! Is it possible that a god delights in threatening and terrifying men for honest investigation and unbelief? Think of a God wicked and malicious enough to purport such cruelty! This doctrine renders God the basest and most cruel being in the universe. There is nothing more degrading than to worship such a god. Lower than this the soul can never sink. If the doctrine of eternal ROASTING for honest unbelief is true, let me share the fate of the unconverted; let me have my portion in hell, rather than in heaven with a god savage enough to inflict eternal misery upon any of the sons of men.
