Can someone cash a check 9 months later, after we cancel our contract a week after the check was issued?
Checks are good as long as the account is still current
You can put a block on the check for 36 bucks give or take.
The check that was issued to the person is still valid and as long as long as the bank account it is written to is active. However, if the check is blocked before it is cashed, it becomes void.
No, cheques are not good for ever .. I know, here in Ontario ... Checks must be cashed within 6 months ... After that, they are considered "stale dated".
There is no federal law that requires banks to turn away stale-dated checks. The law simply gives the bank the discretion to do so and, typically, each bank has its own policy for how to handle such checks.
