I got a terrarium, in fact two of them, for Christmas too. I'm so excited to set it up. I'm thinking of doing one as a desert and one as a jungle. I don't think it would be too difficult to find cacti that don't grow very fast, especially if I don't water it very often. I'm thinking I'll follow the weather in Arizona and only water it when it rains there. I'll have to get a grow light though, not enough sun year-round here in Oregon. No reason to wait for spring to plant it up, you're creating a garden in a warm house, so the season won't matter unless you're going to plant bulbs, which would (imo) be weird. Find some tiny ferns, keep the terrarium evenly most, maybe put a mirror in it to look like a pond. Go crazy with your creativity. The thing to be mindful of is only use plants that need the same watering needs, and the same amount of sun.

Grand Fir is always good. They'll stay green even in winter.

I guess Cedar would work too but I'm not a big fan.
