It is/was. But lately we have been having "lunatics" go on shooting sprees in movie theaters, malls, schools, everyplace. I was mainly being sarcastic.

Personally I LIVE in one of the areas where we do not have to lock our doors or worry about what we leave outside. It just saddens me so much for these innocent people to go out for a night of fun, or children to go to school, or people to go shopping, and never make it home

I'm sure that is very true. There are certainly war zones in Africa. Having been to Nigeria, I know first hand that it can be a very frightening place. The civilian people were very gracious and welcoming. The officials were totally corrupt, you had to give bribes to get anything done, even if they were doing their jobs.

I agree. My nephew went to Nigeria, and my Dr. is from Nigeria, and both have said the exact same thing koichan.

Australia and New Zealand are the safest countries I can think of, maybe parts of Europe and Costa Rica too. We still have to lock our doors, but luckily we don't have to worry too much about getting shot. I think our country is lucky that the worst we have to think about is a car accident, stabbing or illness. I'm glad that there are at least any towns left on Earth where you can feel pretty safe.

I traveled extensively in Europe and Scandinavia in the late 70's. With the exception of some immigrants, I never felt threatened while I was traveling around. In fact, it was completely safe to hitchhike around. While I was in Norway, there was a gas station where the gas pump was quite a piece away from where you paid for it. I bought my fuel and then walked to the cash register to pay for it, I told them how much I had bought. The attendant started to take my money for the purchase, the supervisor spoke to the attendant, who then walked to the pump to check if I was telling the truth. Sad commentary on the trust Americans warranted in those countries.

Peru- especially the Machu Pichu trail. I've heard desperate, poor people will stalk you, then rob you, and won't hesitate to knife you if you don't give them everything. Still going one day anyways, I'll just hire a few local bodyguards :)
Plus Mexico fo sho. I got lost there in a metro station when I was 12. Felt like hours before mum found me. She'd only just finished telling me about a story of a kid in Mexico City who got his eyeballs surgically removed to sell on the black market, then got dumped in a local park. Freaky! I cried like a mothaF.
