What is a fault in science terms

I need it for a science project

A break in the earth, like an enormous crack, often occuring where two plates have colided or separated. Earthquakes are common around faults

geological terms would be like a ravine or break in the earths surface along a fault line.

Fault in geology means an extended break in a body of rock. For example: the San Andreas fault in California.
