Why Red Indians are called as Indians when they are not?

because Christopher Columbus thought he was in India when he was in North America. So he called the Native Americans Indians.
I personally feel the poor guy just needed space from his wife and he just used this as an excuse. mhm :/

Columbus though he was in India when he arrived in the americas,hence the name Indians
