No. My husband is a third degree in WTF and ITF. Your friend is just beginning. That is the second belt. It will take a long time and lots of hard work.. Hope he sticks with it!

Specific wording of the "meaning" of the yellow belt might vary within each school, and it might also be important for the student to grasp the concept well enough to describe the significance of the belts as well as memorizing an official quote offered by the instructor.
The yellow belt represent a students progress toward black belt. It represents a certain level of skill or a certain set of skills. Each school sets its own curriculum, so two students from different school with a yellow belt might not know all the same kicks, blocks or forms.
Poetically, the yellow belt represents the earth from which taekwondo skills sprout and takes root.

It is typically the second belt given, after starting. the first belt, which is white.

Stuff like that is good to know but only rely on it to a point and don't get too cocky about it. A old Marine once told me that the Japanese on Okinawa (WW2) were trained in Martial arts but he and his unit went through them like butter in hand to hand.

Hey! Yellow belt is higher than white belt!
In our Taekwondo school, a yellow belt is the second level. Where you don't exactly get to learn all the cool self defense stuff. It's more like laying the foundation for when you reach green belt. (I teach white and yellow belts, so that's why i know) :)
But i bet he knows a lot more than when he first started!
But don't expect him to know how to do all the cool moves and take away guns and stuff like that. that would probably come later.

PEOPLE, THE YELLOW BELT IS THE THIRD COLOR, NOT THE SECOND. There are different levels of every color except white. You have to train hard and take a huge test just to get to the next level. Yellow is pretty dang good. Take this from someone who actually DOES tae kwon do.
