Is this a sign of an allergy?

every time I eat crab or shrimp and sometimes clams my throat starts to feel weird and itchy. this never happens with fish and my parents think that I am only coming up with excuses so that I don't have to eat the meal

Show your parents what Sabre wrote to you. Ask them to at least talk to your doctor's triage nurse, or nurse if he is in private practice. This is nothing to take lightly, no excuse is enough, you need not just to not eat shellfish when it is served at home, you need to have an eip-pen in case you come in contact with it by accident. Please, take this seriously, be Pro-Active and get on top of this if you want to live a long and healthy life. This is important, are you listening to us?

What can I do to convince my parents?
Report as
Tell them that you dont like it and maybe they wont feed it to you. Or just itch your mouth a lot and keep going up to your parents and complain.
Report as
I DO do that. They still think I come up with this stuff
Report as
when they give it to you on your plate, shop it up and seperate it. It would look like you ate it. Or when your parents are not looking, put it back in the dish
Report as
It makes it itchy any way. It's ok I feel like I really am coming up with excuses. Thanks any way

This is not a small allergy, it is a life-threatening condition. don't talk about serious medical conditions if you don't know anything about it.

Yes it is, STOP eating those things! Food allergies increase every time you eat them. Take it from someone who has been hospitalized and almost died from food allergies, don't eat any more of the stuff.

Have them take you to the doctor to be tested for the allergies. That's all I can think of :(
Report as
Thank you anyway. It helps to say something at least right?

Sounds like a very minor reaction similar things used to happen to me with chicken

Because of the swelling and itchy throat, this is not a "very minor" reaction. You have a very minor reaction, she does not. This is a condition that could kill her, don't throw in your two cents worth when you have no idea what you're talking about.

Yes crab makes me itch too. Stop eating it because, like someone else said, allergies get worse.

Please tell your parents that if they force you to continue eating any shellfish, you could die within minutes.
You have a profound allergy that at some point will develop into what is called anaphylactic shock. This is a
Frequently fatal overwhelming allergic response by the entire body, especially the heart and lungs. Your reddened, itchy and swollen mouth, tongue and throat are serious signs that your body has a PROFOUND allergy to iodine and shellfish. Shellfish contain iodine.
This should be reported to your family doctor as soon as possible. You MUST ALWAYS tell medical staff when asked about allergies ( there is iodine in some medical tests) . You should probably always have what is called an "Epi pen" with you in case you accidentally consume this. It will help the allergic reaction but you then still need to have 911 called immediately as the epinephrine may not be powerful enough to prevent your body going into cardiac and respiratory arrest. This is considered a very serious medical emergency needing an ambulance because your throat could swell shut and you will not breathe.
When you eat away from home at a friends house or a restaurant, you now must always ask if the food has seafood in it or has touched it. ( Crab, shrimp, crawfish, lobster etc) the chef must have washed their hands before touching anything after they have touched seafood. You probably are allergic to latex as well. tell you doc this.
Have benadryl available at home, school, your car, close to wherever you are. I would carry a packet in my purse or pockets. Benadryl offers some effect but not nearly as much as an Epi pen.
Your parents have acted like fools, frankly. They need to talk to your doctor as soon as possible if they still don't believe you
Good Luck an ICU Trauma Nurse

Ok thanks for the help

Sabre, thank you for taking the time to write in detail. I hope she listens and realizes that this could kill her. Sometimes I just want to put my hands around them and shake!

ThNks, but in this case I am dumbfounded by such clueless parents that they couldn't bother to check out an obvious problem. Just plain frightening how closely this kid has been to death.
But perhaps some other kid or kids learned something that saved a life.
Cheers

We can sure hope. I kind of hammered a couple of childish answers on here. It's one thing to guess at questions like, Am I Cute, or What Should I Do...I'm Bored, but to say it's just a "small allergy" makes me want to thump them...vigorously!

I am the kind of person who likes to inform myself in many things. If I feel that I need something I gather the info I need and yes I have shown my parents. I am not joking when I say thank you to any one

Oops wrong person lol sorry

No problem here. I hope your parents listen to you. Did it seem to help?

Hi! I am greatly relieved that you showed this to your parents and they believed you. Since you ate a middle schooler and it is your body, ultimately your responsibility to inform people involved with your care or cooking food you may eat.
Would you please also tell your school nurse and the woman who runs your cafeteria. The nurse, especially, can help educate your parents too.
There is a lot of good information on the internet but, as you can see from some of the answers, not everyone gave you correct information.
Thanks for your note thanking us! Take care, sweetie!

That sounds like a shellfish allergy. You can be allergic to shellfish with out being allergic to regular fish.
You should see a doctor. In the meantime, if it happens again, take 2
Benadryl. BUT SEE A DOCTOR.
