How do you mention or "tag" someone in a Facebook post w/o it having to show up on their Timeline? Is it possible?

I don't want to annoy the people I want to read it by having it show up on their own Timelines. If not possible, let me know please :)

If you tag them it will show on their timeline .

Just spell out their first name only in whatever it is you're posting. It shouldn't show up on their wall then.

I don't mean to bother you, but does that work even if I click on their name when I spell it out? I wasn't sure if it just sends them a notification that they were mentioned in a post or by clicking on their spelled out name, it shows up... Thank you for answering! :)

I'm pretty sure it works, but if you are so serious in not letting them know that you're posting about them just... Say there name is Ashley put it as @shley, but what I said originally does work. But I've never tried it, because I want people to know I'm posting about them :P

I don't think using just their first name will work . Think about it .. If you type "Joe" how will it know which person you mean ??

That's the point, he doesn't want the person to know he is talking about them. I'm not sure why though.

Yea , I was thinking the same thing . Why tag them if you don't want them to know ?? Seems strange

A "mention " is different though

:) lol. No no no. That's not it at all. I want a couple of my friends to read a post I'm writing if they aren't online and don't see it when I post it. I wanted them to "see" it by putting their name in but I didn't want them to get annoyed by them having it on their Timelines, in which case, they would have to delete it. It's nothing negative. I'm a nice person. And a she. I just made the mistake of "tagging" a bunch of people in a post and they all got it on their Timelines. lol. Thank you guys for responding :) The "mention" thing, I know you can write out their name and "click" on it IN the actual post, but I was curious if that also led to it being on their Timeline and not just sending a notification that they were "mentioned." Still not sure on that yet.

They should get an email notification that they were mentioned

They shouldn't if you do what I said..

It's simple don't upload and don't tag them. I'd hate to have someone put my pic on any Social network without my consent, but more tragic is without my knowledge. When in doubt leave it out
