Welding Procedure for steel tube to embed in CIP

What are the limits to welding a 8x8 inch tube steel to an embed in a poured in place Floor system. Will the heat crack the concrete due to excess heat applied to welding?

It won't crack the concrete,but the area around it will spall or pop from the heat.

The weld point will become contaminated from the spalling concrete dust and probably cause porosity in the joint weld unless you can protect it with a flat metal shield over the adjacent concrete.

The embed plate is a 14x14 inch x 5/8 inch thick plate. Overhead weld. No concrete dust to worry about. We think that the crack is from expansion and contraction.

Unless you have extreme temperature fluctuations in addition to significant flexing there shouldn't be any cracking in a 14"x14" x 5/8" steel plate unless the steel was defective from the manufacturer. Keep in mind we're trying to envision a picture based on limited description of each element and the applications' purpose etc.

If you are wanting to weld the 8" pipe to the 14"x14"x 5/8" steel plate base then the answer is No it will not crack the concrete. It may spall the concrete surface below the well point but will not adversely affect the strength of the concrete.
