What is your religion?

I am interested in knowing what some people believe in. I will not judge you based on what you answer simply because, who am I to judge your religion. You are allowed to believe in whatever you want too. I am Catholic and have been my entire life. Also, If you don't mind answering,. What got you into this religion? Did your family raise you in this religion, or did you choose it yourself?

I don't think this question should be on here. It is just a way to get everyone arguing about it. I think it's too personal.

I am sorry watermelon21. I did not think of it having those negative consequences. I understand some people will argue with others but I am trying to learn what other people believe in.
Report as
Well, you just made me feel sad for putting that now. But I am agnostic. & I understand that you want to learn about others' religions. I'm sorry I was so rude just now.
Report as
There is no reason to feel sad for putting that. If that is how you feel then that is fine. I understand this is a very sensitive subject and I should have approached it more carefully.
Report as
When I normally hear that question, it starts debates on the whole "God" thing. So, I try to stay clear of it. I don't think anyone should argue about religion..It's their opinions.

I don't have a religion, although I do believe that God exists, to an extent. I think religions just tear people apart and not let some people who love each other be together.

I attended the protestant church and went to sunday school and church every week by myself. I wanted to believe and to be part of something big and important, but after attending for years, none of the adults could give me satisfactory answers to the kind of questions that intelligent people have been asking for hundreds of years. The answers I did get were fluffy, not logical, and designed to discourage me, and the others, from inquiring further. In the end, I could not believe that myths were real, or that there was a reason for God telling one of his salesmen to relay to me details of what God wanted me to do. I was listening then. I felt lied to, so I wandered away. I'm an atheist now and have not regretted it for even a nanosecond. This is more satisfying.

What kind of questions? I'm not trying to persuade or convert you. I'm just curious. Also wondering if you have posed the questions again in your adulthood with the same results.
Report as
That's what happened to me.
Report as
Thank you for being so nice about it. I expected attacks and intolerance, but I just had to state the core reasons for leaving the church. There are others, as I'm sure you know.
Report as
Only the comment from Bambino appeared when I commented, so these look out of order to me.
@haronyb: The standard questions that children ask about the logistics of religion and the intentions of a God. This was before I knew about how other religions were structured. One Q that dominated was why God told salesmen to tell me/us what he wanted us to do. Why not speak directly to us? Why did God need so many animals slaughtered to keep him happy? I loved my dog. I watched sheep at a nearby farm and they were as dumb as sheep. I was not flock material. Other Qs: What happens when God is not happy? (people get killed). I decided at age 8 that if nobody believed in that God, he wouldn't have any power. So I went to other Christian churches to get better information. I even went to a Russian Orthodox church in the forest. There was no synagoge or I would have tried there. I went everywhere -- Presbyterian, Baptist, Catholic, Anglican. It was the same structure -- different salesmen and building, and no answers. It was too unsatisfying to me. After awhile, I didn't believe anything they said anymore. There was no evidence for anything they said, especially "God wants you to . . . . . .!
Report as
Wow. They didn't have ANY logical answers? Did they not KNOW the God they served? I can understand why you would walk away. People that claim Christ should know what they believe and why they believe it.
Report as
When my son (he's 7) asks questions of any nature, I try to explain to him in ways he can understand. It takes a lot of thought and effort to communicate during these times because I don't want to "dumb" anything down, but at the same time I need to meet him where he is at. There are some things that he has asked that no matter how I explain, his 7 year old mind won't be able to grasp it. In those cases, I tell him we will discuss it when he's older. Not because I don't know or don't want to tell him but because I know he doesn't have the maturity to grasp or handle whatever it is. As he matures and his mental capacity expands, so will my answers to his questions.
Report as
A very thoughtful answer, Rath. Thanks. (And I can't find that Pastafarian question but still looking.)
Report as
I answered it. Look for me, Dozy.
Report as
@harmony, they didn't have any answers that made sense to me. They dumbed everything down to an insulting level. I had lived on a First Nations reserve for a bit, so I was well-schooled in mythology and understood the purpose of the stories, and here were adults in my own culture telling me that the multi-coloured coat, the burning bush, the talking snake, the salt-people, and Adam and Eve really existed instead of explaining the symbolism and the cultural messages about behaviour and social interactions and expectations. I hope this makes sense to you.

Harmony, what does the born again part mean to you? I'm just curious.
Report as
Dead to sin and alive in Chirst. Does that mean I never sin? Nope. Does it mean I'm perfect? Nope. Dead to my old way of living. Renewed. Redeemed. Saved. Changed. Healed. To sum up, 2 Coritnthians 5:17 says, "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone the new has come!" I was broken. Raised by an alcoholic. I was into drugs. Had lots of sex. I was a theif. I was very.....sad. The drugs and sex were fun, but left me feeling empty and even more lonely. God has given me beauty for my ashes.

My religion is based around Harry Potter. I started reading the books when I was younger and it made my life amazing. Without them, no person can know magic because Harry Potter is magic. He is our savior because he defeated the Lord Voldemort. Um, but I'm actually contemplating on becoming a Pastafarian; it sounds decent. I don't know, I'm an atheist but I might create my own belief system.

I was raised in a Methodist/Christianity setting. But it was my parents who put me through it. Now that I'm "older" I choose to believe in "A GOD or Higher Power," but I choose not to practice any organized religion. I feel a person's relationship to their "GOD" is best when it's private and on a personal level. I think it is more "real" that way, so to say.

I was raised a Christian, but I'm atheist now. A girl told me she was atheist, and all I said was "cool". But it really got me thinking. By the next day, I had realized that I was atheist already, but trying to trick myself to be Christian by thinking things like, "the big bang was god creating the universe" and not thinking about it any more than that. I've been atheist(officially) for a little over a year now.
