The animal I left with someone was abused by them?

I left my hamster, Autumn, with my 16 and 9 year old neighbors to watch for a week while I went on vacation. I told them that they shouldn't play with her since she is skittish and bites people. I also told them specifically how to feed and water her. Well, she bit the 9 year old because she tried to pick her up. The 16 year old poured out her food and took away her water, then hit Autumn. Autumn is a HAMSTER and he HIT her. She used to let me hold her, now she is SO SCARED she won't even let me touch her. Should I pay them like I promised? How to I regain her trust?!

How hard did the 16 year old hit her? Is she showing any signs of pain or reduced movement? If so please get her to a vet in case there's any serious damage like a broken bone or organ issues.

Make sure your hands are always clean when you're near Autumn's cage. Get a pair of garden gloves or something to help stave off any bite wounds she tries to leave on you. Stock up on treats, and here's what you do. Sit in the bathtub, wearing thick jeans and socks so she can't bite your legs. Let her move around in the tub with you, and sit still and let her sniff you and reacquaint herself with how you smell. This is where the treats come in. Offer her some, first a couple inches from your hand, then by hand, and then hold out your hand flat while holding the treat. She should eventually learn to associate your hands and smell with good things and be handle-able again. Outside of the bathtub time (once a day or so), sit by her cage, and talk to her. Gentle soft sounds are reassuring, and knowing your voice can be a huge help. My hamsters all know when I'm in the room and the friendly ones run up and look to me for some affection. <3 Best of luck. And I wouldn't pay them.

Carlos: Thank you!

toni: I like the nickname, it's different :) And thank you.

shybutsocial: I hope she's okay. Little critters can be so delicate, and it's heartbreaking when they're scared after being friendly or different before.

Do not pay them. You left her there for the purpose of proper care. Those hooligans deserve squat.

Wanna really scare them? File an Animal Abuse report on them. Next time someone asks, maybe they'll be smart enough to say no.
