For my dog (wiener dog), she only ever had 5-6 per litter. Maybe it depends on the dog. I would watch the puppies closely to make sure they each get enough milk. If some are looking very skinny, make sure to switch them out with the fatter ones and maybe ask a vet what you can do to help them get enough.
That's a lot and no it is not normal. If your dog had that many pups you need to talk to your vet about supplementing the mom's milk. you need to increase what the mom eats daily too because it takes a lot to feed those pups.
Please get your dog spayed. The last thing this world needs is more dogs to be homeless, hungry, and euthanized. I'm sorry to keep harping on this, but I follow some animal rescue organizations and the stories they tell are just terribly heartbreaking. Be sure to supplement those babies food, a small momma isn't going to be able to feed them all.
My brothers dog had 12 pups. She was a weinerana. Shey lived in the boot of a car. Lid up with them as that's where she chose to have them. It was under shelter & kept the pups encolosed with her. And yes mum dogs should have extra vitamins etc even before the pups are born. Make sure the mum doesnt get run down. You can also hand rear with pets milk if the mum isn't coping.
