Why has Wayne Rooney not been playing these past weeks

One of the reasons why Wayne Rooney was not playing was in favor of the newly signed, Robin Van Persie. At the same time, Rooney had suffered a severe gash at his right leg which has kept him out for four weeks. However, he made his come back at the end of 2012.
