It's a dark slow-burning thriller (based on a play of the same name) about two young men who, influenced by the Nietzsche-ian ideas encouraged by their old prep-school teacher, murder a former classmate (with the titular rope) in order to prove they are "superior" by committing a perfect crime. They then have a dinner-party with various guests connected to themselves and the victim during which the body of their victim is hidden in the room.
I saw it a long time ago and I enjoyed watching it. I think there's supposed to also be some pretty interesting things about the way the film was shot in terms of film history. Apparently, Hitchcock wasn't satisfied with how the film turned out.
