Would you choose to be a pedophile? Why would god make some people attracted to preadolescent children?

Report as

I believe sexual preferences are acquired, much the same way as we acquire tastes for food, or music, or art, or anything else. I know we don't make a conscious decision over what we will prefer but I don't believe we're hard-wired for it either. It is something we acquire during our development, though the actual process of that acquisition eludes us. By way of analogy I have a preference for classic rock. I didn't choose that preference but I wasn't born with it easier. Somehow I developed that preference, though I'm not sure myself exactly how. I heard all kinds of music growing up. Why that particular genre resonates with me is a mystery to me. I believe the same is true of sexual preferences. No one chooses to be a pedophile. But I don't believe anyone is fated from birth to become one either.

Pedophilia is a paraphilia that involves an abnormal interest in children. A paraphilia is a disorder that is characterized by recurrent intense sexual urges and sexually arousing fantasies generally involving: nonhuman objects; the suffering or humiliation of oneself or one's partner (not merely simulated); or animals, children, or other nonconsenting persons. Pedophilia is also a psychosexual disorder in which the fantasy or actual act of engaging in sexual activity with prepubertal children is the preferred or exclusive means of achieving sexual excitement and gratification. It may be directed toward children of the same sex or children of the other sex. Some pedophiles are attracted to both boys and girls. Some are attracted only to children, while others are attracted to adults as well as to children.

Pedophilia is defined by mental health professionals as a mental disorder, but the American legal system defines acting on a pedophilic urge as a criminal act.

People are born like this. No one chooses to be attracted to children. Can you imagine how inconvenient that would be? I'll concede that gay is not inconvenient but liking kids would be on par with cancer I think.

You know Truth, I've often wondered this very thing myself, and every time I've asked a religious person this, I'm told God has no say so in what happens. It says in the bible, he chose to not interfere, and he gave people free will. So I always come back with, but doesn't God know everything about us? Even before we are born? So if he knew about "bad" people, why does he let them be born? And so far I have yet to hear a decent answer.

Why would anyone choose to be attracted to children? Doesn't that just make hooking up super hard? I really would like to hear a decent answer to this question but I'm afraid I might just get regurgitated scripture.
Report as
Ah, but wherein lies the logic that God would give free will, not interfere with said free will...yet "know all about us"?? Bet you never thought to hear this from a Minister! :)
Report as
Sorry I can't help you Truth, some questions will never have a "good" answer.
Report as
Rev, I just did some research, because I thougth I read in the bible, that God knows us. But I couldn't remember a scripture to quote. If God knows us, then Free will is not an excuse.
"The Bible teaches that God is all-knowing or omniscient. The word "omniscient" comes from two Latin words omnis signifying all, and scientia signifying knowledge. When we say that God is omniscient it means that He has perfect knowledge of all things. He does not have to learn anything and He has not forgotten anything. God does not have to reason things out, find out things, or learn them gradually. He knows everything that has happened and everything that will happen. God also knows every potential thing that might happen. God even knows those things that humankind has yet to discover. This knowledge is absolute and unacquired. The omniscience of God means that He has perfect knowledge, perfect understanding, and perfect wisdom as to how to apply the knowledge."

Report as
Why would he give, obvious bad people, and I say "obvious" because he knows them, a chance to even be brought into this world? He's giving this psycho free will, and taking away some BABIES innocence. What kind of God does this?

I find it very funny that every question someone who's not Christian asks, everytime, it's followed with, because people have free will. Just seems kind of convenient to me.
Report as
It's not god's job to prevent bad people. They'll be punished in the end. And we're not living in heaven to have everything clean and cut.
Earth is inbetween. So bad things happen and bad people are born. Only the good will go to heaven, which they deserve, a place where there's no evil.
Then the bad, with the rest of the bad, will go to hell. That's when god will get in and punish them for all taht they've done. But now he's giving them a choice. Everyone's got a choice on what to do.
Report as
Like I said above, kind of convenient.

He didn't create me. My mother and father "created" me. And I certainly didn't answer this question, to have someone preach to me. So save it for someone who cares.
Report as
I brought up the few questions, to prove my point. Everytime a person, who isn't religions has a question, about why things happen, we are told "everyone is given free will". No explanantion needed. Because free will explains it all, yet the bible clearly says, God knows everyone. So if these people are bad, and God knows it before they are "created" there would be absolutely NO reason to even test them. There would be no reason to "TEST" anyone because God already knows them.
Report as
I was always told that everyone has a choice. God doesn't create people and make them do bad things. no. God would leave you do something bad, if you want to, but he doesn't force you to. That's not god's will. That's the person's own will.
These "pedophiles" could have been Nuns forexample, if they wanted to. But that's not what they picked and that's how their life turned to be.
Report as
it's your choice if you don't want to believe. uhm..You're welcome...

If God exists he already knows I don't believe, and he knows exactly why. So you're right. It is my choice. Now go along, preach to someone else, and have a great night.

Jedi bagel you are not understanding me. I'm not asking why someone would hurt a child like that- I'm askingWHY WOULD ANYONE CHOOSE TO BE ATTRACTED in the first place. This is no choice any human would make for themselves- it yields no benefit but only inconvenience. A murderer might kill for anger or revenge but this is a fetish. You do not choose fetishes- you are born into them. So why would god MAKE anyone attracted to preadolescent children?
Report as
I'm just trying to be clear hear because I realize there is subtle difference.
Report as
I am understanding you, and still, it is their own choice, or free will
Report as
You are saying you could choose to be attracted to the same gender? Or kids? Or trees?
Report as
Not me specifically, because I choose not to, but not fighting the urge to do so is a choice
Report as
I'm not talking about a ting on the urges. I'm asking do you get urges to be with kids? Can you choose to have those urges and if not you specifically what makes you think anyone else can? Isn't it more likely the people with urges to be with kids have absolutely no control over those urges but rather only if they act on them?
Report as
I don't, no
And I just can't fathom that simply being how someone is, I mean, I wasn't born automatically attracted to females, but I like this route, so I'm going to stick with it. As for any other route, I wouldn't know personally so I suppose I can't know for sure
Are you a pedo o.O?
Report as
No but I can empathize because I too know what it feels like to be persecuted for things I have no control over- I'm atheist.
I'm concerned if you grew up and rather found your self attracted to kids than women- what would you feel gods plan for you was? There are people like this and it makes me wonder , if there were a god , wtf?
Report as
The plan is back to the basics, someone thinking like that must want to be thinking like that
Report as
That is circular logic. Again the question is raised- why would you want to think like that?
Report as
Again, the answer is given...
That's obviously not the answer your looking for, so you'd best stop asking

Would you choose to be attracted in this way? It's not even convenient.

I'm not sure how you interpreted my answer, but what I meant was that, 'yes, it's wrong, but He gave us the free will to see who remains clean and who does not'.
I pray I will never do such a thing.
Report as
Well are you attracted to them? I would think this would only be very terrible for pedophiles. I mean, if you are not, what if you woke up tomorrow and were only attracted to first graders? Would you think god has a good plan for you? Because this is some people's realities especially when you consider the Catholic Church.
Report as
No, I think that God has given me the car and expects me not to drive it into others' properties nor kill others with it. He wants me to control it. At the first place mere attraction may not be so bad, as long as you control it, though abnormal. But if you put one step up to be closer to a 'human, you'd better eliminate the attraction too.
Report as
That is what I mean though. Why would there be this attraction at all? What good could come of some of the population being attracted to kids?
Report as
And that's what I replied first. :)
This is the 'structure' of the world. We have the power and we can do everything, but we are not ALLOWED to do everything. And perfection finds its meaning when you can do wrong, but you will never. Then you're a human.
So, that's the way we are put to test.
Report as
I'm not satisfied with your answer but thank for participating.
Report as
Let me make my last try:
What is wrong with this:
God created the world. And at some point the humans. He gave them free will, because He wanted to test them and, at the end, reward or punish them according to what they have done- right or wrong. And He also gave them wisdom to be able to know right from wrong, besides the orders He had sent by messengers.
Now, Everyone might be interested in something that others may not. So, everybody has to be tested by means of what they like. Someone is into gaining money. So, he should control what he does, whether he earns it by by robbery, bribery, etc , or from the right way. Someone else may be interested in sex, but not money, so, they are tested by sex- how they quench their desire.
Besides, this way everyone is tested in every aspect of the life.
Remember one more thing: where d you get your love and kindness towards the first-graders or others you mentioned? Whoever has given that to you, surely has more of it than you. Besides, the love you have is a sign of the love He has. He loved children, so he wanted them to be loved.
Report as
I just want to make clear- you do understand what pedophilia is? It's not just like "I love kids soooooo much" but rather "I want to touch them in there no no zones a lot!" Are you saying god is a pedophile and so he made some people like that?
Report as
haha, no!
I'm saying that YOU, Truthisobvious, are anxious for the kids because you LOVE. Be sure that that the one who created them and also from whom you get the love, loves them MORE. A LOT.
Now please reflect on what I said before.:)

@Dozy Again, I am not comparing the two #T_T You are all getting ahead of yourselves. As you can see (by simply reading the answer- really, it's not that hard) I began the answer with "Many Christians believe.." Which was supposed to tell you that the statement was based on what I've heard Christians say and based on what they believe (I.e. Christians believe gays choose, therefore I'll assume they think pedophiles do as well because they pretty much assume that all choose with the exception of straight people) You can easily see what MY opinion is by reading the words following "in my opinion".
@JediBagel I'm sorry but I don't understand what you're getting at here. Creepy is referring to pedophiles, not gays, therefore I would think only a pedophile would find that to be offensive.
Report as
It can't. Gay is at least convenient. There is a culture and support system with gay. Choosing to be a pedophile is completely irrational. There is no club for picking up kids, if you hook up your a felon and every person treats you like a pariah. Tell me what good reason would a person have to choose this fetish?
Report as
MsStina, I was being sarcastic, I understand that your using the term creepy to describe a pedophile, I was just implying it can be used to describe a lot of things
Report as
MsStina, you don't think ay's will be offended by this? What world are you living in? I'm even offended by this comparison and I'm not gay. You are the one who brought up this comparison, just because you precede your comparison with "Many Christians believe that", doesn't justify this very harsh comparison.
Report as
ay's was supposed to be *gay's.
Report as
Agh you people are making this more difficult than it has to be. You are all assuming that I'm some Christian, anti-gay "bigot" but that's just a harsh and inaccurate assumption. I figured someone would take it wrong but I didn't think the assumptions were to be taken to such an extreme. Actually I think it does make up for it because, again, I am not stating how I view the subject but how I would (reasonably) think a Christian would think of it (like I've said, if you just read my comment, the Christian view is traditionally "straight people don't choose their sexual orientation, but everyone else does" so it is very REASONABLE for me to assume that pedophiles would follow under that same category since they don't follow traditional Christian ways... I'm not sure how else to word that. I just mean everyone not straight, basically..) It's like if I said "Many violent sociopaths wouldn't find a problem with murder" That doesn't mean I don't have a problem with murder.
Report as
Cj, that's just a part of the Christian faith that one sin is as bad as another, I'm sure MsStina didn't mean to hurt anyone
Report as
@Jedi I still don't get it.
@Truth I don't think they really choose it like "Hey I think I'm gonna be a pedophile today!" but I'm saying it may not be totally innate, possibly a scr3wed up upbringing could have had to do with it. I'm no expert, this is basically a combination of guessing/common sense/Many episode of Law & Order SVU lol. And just in case more people want to nit-pick and get mad at me, this is NOT the same way I think about gays, whose sexual preference I do know innate, typically not having to do with Inez's upbringing. But I don't think anyone can change what their sexual preference is.
Report as
Ty mstina sry for all the confusion your answer is at least thoughtful which is more than I can say for most others.
If you would, considering you agree people don't choose there preference, how would you account for god giving some people of earth such a bizarre preference? Why would he make pedophilia one of the randomly generated preferences for us? Unless you think it's entirely dependent upon upbringing that is.
Report as
You're welcome & thank you ^_^ No idea, I'm not really sure about anything regarding this topic. I think I believe in God but everything else is fuzzy. In my opinion this has nothing to do with God but instead genetics + upbringing, nature and nurture working together. I read in my psychology text book that some study found that like 60%ish+ of the way a person is is dependent on genetics on upbringing.. Like that upbringing has an effect, but not a huge one with the exception of traumatic experiences during childhood and stuff like that. So maybe that includes sexual preference, maybe not. All I can narrow it down to is genetics and nurture, not God.

Call me all the names you want but doing so doesn't change the fact that personal choices to perform evil acts on innocent children is evil no matter WHO does it. We make all kinds of choices every day--some of them sinful. Christians have an assurance that they are forgiven by a mighty God. Evil people perform the same sins over and over without remorse. I abhor evil acts and the people that do them. Judgmental and proud of it. Even non Christians abhor evil and judge it so. Those poor innocent children deserve a society that judges pedophiles as evil. God will not be mocked.

Christians can only TRY to spread the message of a loving God. God doesn't expect that we argue with atheists. Without saying much more, I can only add that unbelievers are more likely to commit evil acts because the have no higher Spirit to help them fight their carnal desires. And, AGAIN, God doesn't make someone evil; they personally choose their behaviors, give in to them, and do harm to others. People beat and choose to kill people. God is heartbroken with their overt acts of sin and unbelief.

People are free moral agents and they have the freedom of choice, the choices we make are up to us. How ever God gave us a conscience and if we fail to listen to our conscience then we have to suffer the consequences.===========================The Lord gave us mind and conscience; we cannot hide from ourselves. (Proverbs 20:27 GNTD)===========The God of the bible is a righteous just and holy God there's no darkness or sin in him, let us not charge him foolishly by darkening counsel with words without wisdom. =============And this is the message [the message of promise] which we have heard from Him and now are reporting to you: God is Light, and there is no darkness in Him at all [no, not in any way]. (1 John 1:5 AMP)===============But you are pure and cannot stand the sight of evil. Will you wink at their treachery? Should you be silent while the wicked swallow up people more righteous than they? (Habakkuk 1:13 NLT)|============ Now to answer your question. No to ====Pedophilia is a paraphilia that involves an abnormal interest in children. A paraphilia is a disorder.

Hey bob glad your here. So I here this choice concept, I get that. I'm talking about the initial attraction to children, not the act of... Yea. Why would god give any person this preference in the first ace do you think?

All I can say would you agree that it's NOT RIGHT! Case closed.===============Definition

Well yea pedophilia is a truly unfortunate affliction. This is why I have made this question. The implications of pedophilia are staggering.

God did not make them this way. Life is a choice. Evil breeds evil. Maybe looking at photos of the innocent ones brought on evil lust. It is our responsibility to refuse that lust.
We are to blame... Not God.

Most pedophiles say they are unaware of making a choice, that they felt a compulsion in the behavior. They knew the risks of the behavior, but could not stop themselves.
This is essentially the treatable sickness in pedophilia: the sexually compulsive nature of the behavior.
.
This is not unlike some other paraphilic disorders, like exhibitionism, frotteurism or BDSM. Each has a compulsive aspect to it that, to the subject, appears as alien to their ego and not of choice. Yet all behavior is chosen, thus the dilemma: what "self" is choosing the self-destructive behavior? Isn't it irrational?
No matter what it's called or the exact nature of the behavior, untreated compulsive sexual behavior can damage your self-esteem, relationships, career and other people. But with treatment and self-help, you can manage compulsive sexual behavior and keep your urges in check. Since it can be managed, it is by definition chosen behavior.

I think you are looking very close to the surface here pâté. While your reason checks out it is clear you Are reducing behavioralism to strictly observable means. I'm not saying I disagree with you necessarily but then again I know you don't think praying is just kneeling with your eyes closed.

Truth, I have treated them, so I have a basis for an opinion. I think you were in agreement with me, so I don't feel the need to explain further.
God rarely has anything to do with our twistedness. It is something of a mystery to me how some turn out as twisted as they do, but treatment is available.
Report as
Pâté you say you have treated pedophiles. If you don't mind me asking, are you a psychologist?

That's my profession. Though I am mostly retired now, I spent my life after the military listening to people for $100/hr. I dabble at the margins these days, as investments have done well.

You know the old joke: neurotics build castles in the air, psychotics live in them, and psychologists collect the rent.

That's very funny shiny, Ty for sharing. You certainly seem the type in a good way.

Truth, you are fighting this subject too hard. What are your motives--to seek truth or rationalize and blame God and society for problems people create?? Sometimes we need to break down and accept that behavior is the responsibility of each of us to control and we must pay society for our failings. And ultimately God. Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Truth is struggling with understanding the phenomenon, making sense of it. It's a good question: why would an all-knowing and loving God put evil people in harms way of innocents?
I do not have convenient answers, only the answer that Job gave: "Though he slay me, yet shall I love him." love is a choice.

Ty shiny- the inquiry is also for the predator.

Monster- religion able gets no where with me so bended knee and such is not helpful. I'm actually not blaming god- I'm atheist. I'm trying to make sense of how theist account for these phenomena.

We all struggle with the problem of theodicy. When I was still a conservative Jew, I read the book by Harold Kushner: When Bad Things Happen to Good People (ISBN 1-4000-3472-8). It's a 1978 book by a Conservative rabbi. Kushner addresses in the book one of the principal problems of theodicy, the conundrum of why, if the universe was created and is governed by a God who is of a good and loving nature, there is nonetheless so much suffering and pain in it - essentially, the evidential problem of evil.

The book is dedicated to the memory of his young son, Aaron, who died at the age of 14 in 1977 of the incurable genetic disease progeria. Rabbi Kushner's book was a New York Times bestseller for many months in the "nonfiction" category.

God doesnt. Satan and evil inherent in the world does that. Inherent evil either causes incorrect growth of a brain or genes, or causes a child to be raised in a situation that makes them open to satans evil (being abused themselves) Then they are fed further temptations an opportunity feed their twisted desires - by satan or agents thereof. It grieves God but all humans are given free choice and God rarely interferes because free choice is for all or no one. It was given to all humans. If He takes it from a few He would to take it from all. Satan twists free will to dark and evil things. A human who abuses makes a clear and free choice to do so and they are free to choose NOT to do so. They arent forced to hurt kids. They do it because they get sexual pleasure from it, or because it makes them feel powerful. In some instances its because its all they know because its how they were treated and in a few cases its because they are convinced the child loves them in a sexual way. There is all sorts of evil in the world, all caused by satan, its minions, or humans in its power.

Happy New Year Truthisobvious ! I believe that wicked and vile thoughts run thru the minds of every human who ever existed. But some choose to entertain them to the point that they go and act on them. They said "yes", while most others said "no". Thanks for asking! Beth

Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God," for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.
But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
James 1:13-15

perverseness is anything against the original design/natural purpose of things...a pedophile has been abused as a child theirself, has a need to dominate a weaker vessel, or is one who has allowed themself to lust/ or be entertained by perverse, evil thought to the point the God given conscience is seared and the action is allowed unto selfishness
