Is being gay a sin?

This is kind of a hard question for me to ask because one of my best friends just came out to me as gay. Before this, I never really thought about if it was a sin or not, because I just went along with what my parents and Church said- that it was. But now I have been thinking a lot about it lately, and it just doesn't seem to make any sense to me why it would be a sin. Any opinions?

Would you try to plug a female end of a cord to a female outlet? Of course not because it's not designed that way. No electricity will flow and no work will be accomplished no matter how good it feels.

Children growing up with both parents loving each other and living in the same household is ideal. I know reality is there are a lot of dysfunctional families do to sin, but (straying from the subject a bit) better to have a man and a woman, then two of the same, engaging in something that will never be fruitful.

If all were homosexual then the human race would die out in one generation. BTW abnormal means not normal. Humans were designed for male and female union (normal).

I don't need a grammar lesson from YOU. Clearly you need one. I find your comments and beliefs repugnant, so you can post them on someone else's thread and stay off of mine.
Report as
Obviously your superior. What absolutes do you espouse? What is your proven standard? Give me your syllogistic premises. I've lost two of my homosexual friends from aids. My other friends who are gay know I love them. I put my arm around them and pray with them. They know if anyone tried to harm them I would be there to defend them, but they know I do not condone there behavior.

It's unfortunate that you do not have any tolerance for those who disagree with you. If you have can illumine me as to your antipathy for those with different views I'm listening.
Report as
If you are standing by your first comment, I want your posting on my thread to end, simple as that. Can you show some common courtesy?
Report as
HaiMai, if you call the Bible a book of bigotry, you obviously don't believe in the Christian faith. That is perfectly fine, to each his own. The question asked by the original poster was not is being gay wrong or abnormal. He used the word sin, therefore he was asking about the Christian belief of homosexuality. It says in the Bible that any man that lays down with another man should be stoned. That tells me that acting upon gay feelings is a sin. With that being said, we are ALL sinners and no one sin is greater than another. I don't believe that being gay is a damnable offense, though.

Ah, the day and age where people believe that being fat is genetic, while homosexuality is a choice.
Report as
Yeah, no kidding, goboom.
Report as
And WHERE, pray tell, in the Bible or otherwise does it say that God looks down on homosexuality?
Report as
There's some nonsense in genesis or something..Problem is, a lot of these folks PICK AND CHOOSE what to believe out of that book.. So when it says "thou shalt not suffer a witch to live," or if your wife is adulterous, stone her to death in the village square, you don't see CHRISTIANS out murdering because the bible says so. Yet, apparently, they can still cling to intolerance and hate about homosexuals because the bible aka god says so. Things like this put me OVER.
Report as
Another thing that is kind of off-topic, how could humanity have possibly continued after Cain and Abel? Not only were they both guys, but even if one wasn't, they would have to continue down the line of the exact same family, meaning genetic defect and death.
Report as
Correct. Some Christians say there were sisters, but they would still reach a genetic dead end and basically die out.

Sin is a religious concept- specifically a Judeo Christian concept.

Homosexuality is inborn. One does not choose his or her sexual orientation, so those denominations decrying homosexuality as a sin might just as we'll claim having blue eyes is a sin, or being left- handed is a sin. Oh wait- they used to do that last one.

I know a lot of people here is going to quote Bible verses, so I am going to give you a link to a blog that I wrote myself not to long ago for a contemporary issues class, explaining why I believe being gay is not a sin. What a lot of people realize who do use Bible quotes to justify it as a sin is that there are some common misinterpretations and mistranslations in the Bible, so I'd like you (and anyone else here who would like to) to read what I have wrote and really look at it from a different view point, here is the link: https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1uv2jk85W3SCdbdg-mhFuWj2v_9l1U971dD_IbFSOIQ8

Well, HE'S NOT GAY! And, whats wrong with that? this is what he said: i dont care as long as they dont bother me! and i replied with: how is Justin Bieber bothering you? he said: i hear him on the radio, again i replied with: turn it off. im sick and tired of people being seperated because of their personality, i just got in the heat of things of answering this question and i just needed to put my feelings out, lol. i dont know whether this helped but hopefully it did. . ? :)

First of all, even the most conservative religious people cannot call "being gay" a sin. Now acting on it is whole different issue.
But here's a good line that I think all of us should stop avoiding like politicians do and be very clear and stand by our decisions no matter what.
The truth is homosexuality existed ever. It's been done proudly by kings and emperors. And no one ever called any of them any names. People at the other end of the act however, have been called many names. So would it be right to laugh about one end and blame the other? (You know what I mean I hope?) in my opinion absolutely not. You see, I have Have gay friends and have found many of them very nice and decent people. And I realize that they didn't sit and think and decide one day that they were going to be gay. I guess that's how they were as far as they knew. It's an orientation that, that very "god" made them with. So, I don't care if some conservatives tell me it's a sin. I don't judge them. And by the way, tell them judges let him who's not sinned cast the first stone. :)
Cheers

Of course they were born that way, that is why we need a savior. Adam sinned and so he passed his genes to all his offspring. Y'shua who was born of a woman did not inherit this sinful nature and he was able to live a perfect life.

Gee, and I thought conservative Christians looked down on women. Y'shua spoke to a woman of ill repute and did not condemn her, but what did He say when He bid her goodbye? Go and do the same? No, He said go and sin no more.

I had gay friends too. Had, because two of them died of aids and the other ones I no longer see since we are far apart physically. However, I would warn them just as I would warn heterosexuals who engage in promiscuity, in a loving way, that they run the risk of contracting a disabling disease as well as being outside God's will for their lives.

Condemn them? No way for then I would condemn myself. If I am out of God's will, please reprove me in love.
Report as
I agree and disagree here. I am not God, therefore I do not judge. However, it does say in the Bible that if a man lays down with another man he should be stoned. That tells me that acting upon any homosexual feelings would be a sin. But not one sin is greater than another and we are all sinners.

No more a sin when acted upon than any other act of fornication, whether it be adultery, incest, beastiality, pedophilia, etc. In other words, yes the leaning is not a sin, however the action is a sin, but no more an issue than any other, but it is the people who are trying to diminish it that is making an issue of it, bringing it to the forefront.

When the Jewish leaders in Acts were debating as to whether the Gentiles should have to be circumcised and follow the Jewish laws, they determined that there was no need and then they reiterated the Noachide laws. Acts 15 is where you'll find it.

And the comment about an obscure passage in the Tanach about homosexuality. There are more passages in the Brit Hakadasha (NT) Romans 1 and I Corinthians 6 as well as others which does not spell it out directly, but simply says sexual perversion which implies any sexual activity outside the bonds of marriage.

Interesting, but side-steps the point, which is, what did Jesus talk about? And why don't Christians talk about that?
Report as
I feel that you are making my case for me. Keep the conversation focused on other peoples' sex life (a brilliant diversionary tactic, I grant you.You can't go wrong tapping into that). Meanwhile, reference to corrupt religious authorities & usury remains conspicuous by its absence.. in spite of the fact that Jesus was far more concerned about those things, if the Gospels are anything to go by.
Report as
You are correct. The reason why I focused on that is because people say homosexuality is inbred and is not a sin. All sin is inbred, because all have sinned.

What Y'shua was upset about, just as I am, is leaders who only care about themselves. Pointing fingers at others when they have three pointing back. A good chapter to read is Ezekial 34.

One thing I detect, you may correct me if I'm wrong, is a disdain for capitalism. That is another topic for another post. Gluttony is a topic which gets little coverage, yet gluttony is just as bad as homosexuality.

One final point is that the "church" spends more time telling people how to live instead of showing them how to live.
Report as
I'm sorry, it's not clear to me if you are asking if I have disdain for capitalism or do I think Jesus would have? If the former, no, I would not use the word disdain. I think unrestrained Capitalism is as untenable as strict Communism but capitalism itself is indispensibe. As for Jesus, that's an interesting question. "Render unto Caesar, that which is Caesars, etc." seems to suggest he wasn't especially interested in politics or economics, but the parable of the loaves & fishes seems to suggest that he would lean toward socialism. Given his condemnation of usury, he doesn't sound like a Wall St. kind of guy. Occupy Wall St. maybe. :) What do you think?
Report as
In context, IMHO, Y'shua's reference about Caesar concerns the fact that the Jews were under Roman rule, and as such were subjects with no political authority. Usury has to do with how you are to treat your brother.

Jews were to set an example to the world just as Christians who are now part of greater Israel are to treat each other.

I will pick this up later as I am being compelled to leave.

Having sex with someone of the same sex is a sin. God made male for females and vice versa. One man for one woman. Beyond that the Bible doesnt have much to say. It does encourage us to love ALL our neighbors however so, sin or not, yoyr friend needs your love and support right now, not condemnation and judgement. Dont tell her/him what you think unless asked directly. As you friend they must already know and may be terrified of your reaction. Surprise them by giving them a big hug and telling them youre there for them. Leave judgement to God. It is possible to be friends without agreeing on everything.

Wow ok. The Bible also says that if you're gay you'll burn in a fiery hell. That sounds like the loving God we worship in church (sarcasm). The Bible was written by PEOPLE during religious war. They'd put anything in there to make sure you'd believe it or "suffer the consequences"
Report as
Correction, the Bible itself does not preach a fiery Hell. Webster?s Dictionary says that the English word "hell" is equal to the Hebrew word Sheol and the Greek word Hades both of which refer to the common grave of mankind. Chrurch's have used the mythological teaching of hellfire as a means to control others.

Matthew 5:22

22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ?Raca!? shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ?You fool!? shall be in danger of hell fire.

Mark 9:43-44

43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched? 44 where

?Their worm does not die
And the fire is not quenched.?

Luke 12:5

5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!

James 3:6

6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

Better guess again.
Report as
Jesus Christ associated fire with Gehenna (Mt 5:22; 18:9; Mark 9:47,48), as did the disciple James, the only Biblical writer besides Matthew, Mark, and Luke to use the word. (Jas 3:6) Some commentators endeavor to link such fiery characteristic of Gehenna with the burning of human sacrifices that was carried on prior to Josiah?s reign and, on this basis, hold that Gehenna was used by Jesus as a symbol of everlasting torment. However, since Jehovah God expressed repugnance for such practice, saying that it was "a thing that I had not commanded and that had not come up into my heart" (Jer 7:31; 32:35), it seems most unlikely that God?s Son, in discussing divine judgment, would make such idolatrous practice the basis for the symbolic meaning of Gehenna.

Therefore, the Biblical evidence concerning Gehenna generally parallels the traditional view presented by rabbinic and other sources. That view is that the Valley of Hinnom was used as a place for the disposal of waste matter from the city of Jerusalem. (At Mt 5:30 Ph renders ge?enna as "rubbish heap.") Concerning "Gehinnom," the Jewish commentator David Kimhi (1160-1235), in his comment on Psalm 27:13, gives the following historical information: "And it is a place in the land adjoining Jerusalem, and it is a loathsome place, and they throw there unclean things and carcasses. Also there was a continual fire there to burn the unclean things and the bones of the carcasses. Hence, the judgment of the wicked ones is called parabolically Gehinnom.". It is evident that Jesus used Gehenna as representative of utter destruction resulting from adverse judgment by God, hence with no resurrection to life as a soul being possible. (Mt 10:28; Lu 12:4,5)

Not guessing friend, just some research.

Ask yourself these questions. Who decides what is or isn't sin? If God created them male and female what were they designed for? If it's okay to be gay why then can't they reproduce? God commanded Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply. Adam and Steve, or Madam and Eve can't be fruitful and multiply.

If there are atheists who don't believe in the Bible; then even nature itself has determined not to let gays reproduce. Either way we're all sinners and we should love them regardless of their sins, but we should also warn them of the consequences of their sins whether they're homosexual or heterosexual living outside God's will.

Except we also see homosexuality in over 200 other animal species- in cooperative species it has an evolutionary advantage.

You also seem to be suggesting that anyone who can't reproduce shouldn't get married or have sex. Sorry infertile folks- you can't have love because you can't be "fruitful".
Report as
and besides people don;t just f%ck for babies
Report as
Skeptikitten- you mean an adaptation advantage there is no evolution, and no I'm not suggesting that marriage is only for pro-creation.

Millions of years of so called evolution and no humans of homosexual proclivities can produce offspring. If your an atheist would you say nature rejects homosexuality for humans? If, as you claim, evolution put it in their genes or (jeans), then why doesn't it let them reproduce?

If God created don't you think He showed by design it's wrong? One final question. If we are just random happenings of an impersonal force then why do you argue I'm wrong since there can be no right or wrong without an absolute standard? Please elaborate on who is the authority, according to you, of that standard?

The Bible describes homosexual acts as unnatural and obscene because they involve sexual activity that was not intended by our Creator. The Bible compares homosexual activity to the sexual relations that rebellious angels, who came to be known as demons, had with women before the Deluge of Noah’s day. (Genesis 6:4; 19:4, 5; Jude 6, 7) God views both acts as unnatural.

if youre basing yourself by what the Bible says read 1 Corinthians 6:9. It DOES NOT say homosexuals but it does say and I quote "nor men kept for unnatural purposes, nor men who lie with men". God created Adam and Eve with the purpose of reproducing and filling the earth something that two men nor two women can accomplish. true we don't need any more human beings filling the earth but that is how God arranged things. I do not feel or think they are less but they are not doing what is correct in god's eyes.

So we cant judge others in Jesus name, cuz were the same. And He is the judge not us. The sword is not ours to swing

According to the Bible, the act of homosexuality is a sin. That being said, I think that homosexuals have no say on what they are attracted to. It'd be like me being sexually attracted to a female. The actual sin is the fornication. It's not wrong to be sexually attracted to someone because you have no say over who you are sexually attracted to. It's only a sin to indulge yourself

Yes The Bible says that homosexuality is a sin, but The Bible is not pure gold, did the bible not say that you were not to cut your hair? We don't listen to that now do we? Another thing, I've heard religious people use the argument that "God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Adam". Yes this is true, but he COULDN'T have two men or two women because they wouldn't be able to populate the earth! I am a faithful Christian and love God, and I fully support homosexuality. I believe that if two people love each other, being opposite genders or the same doesn't matter. All that matters is that they love each other. The bible says that God loves all people, and he forgives us for our sins. So that implies that he loves people who are straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender. Plus, even if it were a sin "God forgives sins." Everything good that God is and does applies to any sexual orientation. I'm pretty sure that he's become very sad by the way that we treat people who aren't considered "normal". Another thing to argue with is the fact that Christian's aren't saints. The Witch Trails? I bet some slave owners were Christian. We were wrong then, I bet we're wrong now. P.S. I'm 14.
