i believe that it would be you in a room with a script with lines for the character your trying for and you would read those parts and the judges would read the other parts.
At least that's what happened when i did.

I heard they just have you read a script.

There usually is a planned script or act you have to read off.

Usually you are told ahead of time so u can be prepared.
You should have something memorized...that demonstrates talent and energy.

you show what you can do, you're expected to provide for yourself ; for whatever scene you do, for example , if you're going to be a cop ; you must have your own uniform ,and fake gun ,and must have a rehearsed act ready to perform ; for your audition audience.Good luck.

It can vary a great deal depending on the audition type and what it is for.

Theater - If it is an open call, they will probably ask for a monologue or a song. If it is an appointment, then they will probably have you read from the script

Film- they will almost ALWAYS have you read from the script while recording the audition so they can see what you look like on camera.

Either way, make sure you are prepared: http://www.backstage.com/advice-for-actors/backstage-experts/10-things-consider-when-preparing-audition-material/
