Do fish sleep?

Report as

Fish keep moving,to keep the water/oxygen flowing through their gills...however,in cold weather, they hibernate.

I've always wondered how they do that??? Do they stop eating? Close their eyes? what?
Report as
They can't digest food below 50 degrees,so they don't eat....they just kinda hang out at the bottom of the pond.
Report as
they don't have fat stores like bears....I'm amazed they survive.

Yep,its really amazing when they freeze..(I have a small landscape pond with 7 fish)....I actually watch their behavior to tell how cold it really is.

Freeze?!?!
Report as
Ha,when the pond freezes,so do they....just hafta keep an open spot thawed so the ammonia from the fish can escape...keeping the pump running usually works.

I've always been an avid gardener and wanted to have a pond but didn't want to kill the fish.

yes, but not sharks if they stop moving they would die because they need water flowing in their mouths and out their gills to extract oxygen from the water.
